this is so interesting, I just wrote a journal entry about this very thing a a week ago or so. here's what I wrote. its basically the same thing as your secret...
I remember at Kendall and also at the College of Creative Studies in Detroit, anime was SUCH a Taboo. SO many people, especially the professors can't STAND it. Me and this other girl once discussed it with a snobby professor I had back in the day at Kendall about it. He loved to discuss why he hated it. He was like "it looks ALL THE SAME!" I remember I told him, I said "LOOK...yeah some of it is gay, but there are certain series and certain artist's who style really stand out. Its still a form of expression as well. I think perhaps artists such as Yuu Watase, Chiho Saito, Rumiko Takahashi, I think they were so popular because their work DID differ slightly. More elegant line work, softer expressions, humorous comedy, stuff like that. Also its not just the character design. Really, the storyline can possibly make or break an anime or manga series. If the characters are gorgeous but the story sucks, yeah it won't work". lol well needless to say, he still thinks I'm dumb about that. He also likes to make fun of me because I like the Thomas Kincade paintings. Whatever. He sucks. Jon McDonald, you're an artistic SNOB and your paintings SUCK! There, I said it bitoch. lol!

I know your account has been deactivated (lol), but let me just say something.
First off, I find it extremely rude and immature of you to call out a Kendall teacher by name just because he doesn't like your personal favorite style of artwork. People have opinions - it doesn't make them "snobs". I don't call someone a snob if they don't like a certain piece of music or food, but when it comes to art someone is a snob. Certainly you yourself are a snob for saying you don't like HIS style of artwork?
Second, usually at art colleges, they are going to be snobby, yes. They frown upon anything that isn't master paintings/Renaissance, etc. and for good reason. I have a professor that also teaches at Kendall that doesn't like "representational art", i.e. things that are supposed to be humans/animals rather than shapes. It is difficult, but it's to help you learn. If you're going to study for any sort of art major, you have to cater to THEIR rules. You can't just draw anime for all your classes and expect to get a passing grade - you have to learn the fundamentals of art before applying a certain style to your work.
tl;dr - Get used to being in art classes, or consider going to a different school or majoring in something else.

"elite", "correct", whatevs, all that is just tosh. You stick to your style and do what you like and enjoy, not what other people think you should. Ignore people who get on a high horse, and be unique in your artistic style. I like something bcs I like it, personally, not because it conforms to something I consider "correct", bcs there is no "correct" in art, there has never been, though before people pretended there was. Toulouse-Lautrec, Shishkin, all these great artists didnt conform and woah now their works cost mind-boggling sums of money. ST FTW

Classic argument pertaining to what is "real art." Don't sweat it if they're up on their high horse, and don't be afraid to knock 'em down.

Tch. Draw whatever you want, those people can shove their 'elite' where the sun don't shine. I actually sometimes find cartoon styles more difficult than more manga inspired styles, and the other day found myself forced to draw fanart in a different style from the original because of the headache I was getting over trying to draw it right in the original style.
I like the look of your art, shame I don't know who you are. ):

This seems like a pretty silly thing for there to be a "war" over. I agree, people need to get over themselves and just do what they want to do without caring what other people think. There's not one right way in art. That kind of defeats the purpose, really.

I go to an art college and my style is frowned upon. I can draw "america cartoons" to but i prefer anime. It's the kinda cartoons I grew up around. Anime makes me happy when I draw it. The Tex Avery style is dead and gone. Look at Ben10 and Ten Titans their american cartoons who copy the japan style
Dont let no one tell you no to draw what make you happy

I feel more looked down upon for doing American-cartoon like stuff. When I draw it people assume I can't do any better :/
People are more impressed with anime a lot of the times I think. (because it's more proportionally correct and realistic)
I think my art is influenced by both though....
And I don't think anime is more difficult. Just to throw that out there. Depending on your influences and what you've been drawing like your whole life EITHER can be hard.

I'm not sure anime is more proportionally correct and realistic, it may seem better but most people who use "anime-style" draw big eyes, small nose and mouth, the faces aren't very realistic (and I'm not even talking about the hair), the body is just as unrealistic as any cartoon style. Those styles are just different, most people draw anime like stuff because it's a trend or they like anime/mangas, nothing's wrong with that, but I'm not sure people ae impressed byt it because it seems more realistic. ^^

I hate people who complain about people drawing anime.
I've been an anime fan for over a decade, I feel I am perfectly entitled to draw it.
Also, I am a fan of some western cartoons, but I rarely draw them. I only draw characters I really like, and most western ones aren't fun to draw =/

I never liked anime, but it's not when people draw anime that annoys me, it's when they draw Naruto or other things a lot. Mostly because I never watch those shows and I never get the jokes, and I feel out of the loop. If the top one is your style, it doesn't really look that Japanese to me. It looks unique, slightly like mine, but different. Do what you like. Like what you do.

I feel the same way, or when people repeat the same face and add different hair every time, or repeat the same thing over and over.
Use the style, but use variety please.

And saying you could do something but you don't is almost always taken as a really lame excuse.
