Description

In the ancient halls of the Ironpeak Mountains, within the heart of the dwarven forges, The Gloomstrike Harbinger was born. Forged not of mere iron or steel, but from the shadow-imbued ores of the Underdepths, it is said that the crossbow contains within it the very essence of darkness that the mountain once held at bay.

The Gloomstrike Harbinger was crafted by Thrain Shadowhand, the master weaponsmith, under a rare celestial alignment when the moon's light waned to its faintest. As Thrain labored, he infused the crossbow with an eldritch power, etching runes of concealment and binding spells of night into its metal.

The bearer of The Gloomstrike Harbinger finds that shadows cling to them like a cloak, granting them the ability to blend with darkness, giving advantage on Stealth checks while in dim light or darkness. The runes etched into the crossbow glow faintly, casting intricate patterns on the ground and allowing its bolts to be traced with a spectral light, causing them to seek out targets partially concealed by shadows or invisibility.

However, the crossbow's curse is as potent as its gift. The user begins to dread the light, finding solace only in the gloom. If they spend more than an hour in bright light without taking respite in shadow, they suffer from Disadvantage on all attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws until they spend at least an hour in dim light or darkness, as the crossbow yearns to return to the comforting embrace of the shadows.

Properties of The Gloomstrike Harbinger:

  • Shadow Cloak: When in dim light or darkness, the wielder gains advantage on Stealth checks as shadows seem to envelop them, making their form blend with the night.
  • Spectral Bolt: The crossbow's runes allow its bolts to seek targets in low visibility conditions, granting the ability to ignore half cover and three-quarters cover for targets that are in dim light or darkness.
  • Night Vision: The user gains darkvision up to a range of 60 feet. If they already have darkvision, the range increases by an additional 30 feet.
  • Curse of The Gloomstrike Harbinger:

  • Light Sensitivity: Exposure to bright light discomforts the bearer. If they remain in bright light for more than an hour, they suffer Disadvantage on attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws until they spend at least an hour in dim light or darkness.
  • Shadow Lure: Each time the wielder uses the crossbow, there is a cumulative 1% chance that they are pulled into the Plane of Shadow for 1 minute at the end of their turn, experiencing visions that can be disorienting. Upon return, they must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be Stunned until the end of their next turn.
  • The Gloomstrike Harbinger is not the mightiest of artifacts, but in the hands of one who respects its dual nature, it can turn the tide of battle and be the difference between victory and defeat, light and darkness.
