Description Just finished reading 'Martin the Warrior', and I will say this: it was a very well-written novel with high action, memorable characters, and diverse cultures and landscapes. One thing about this book that stands out from all the other books I have read was that it made me connect with all of the characters. When a character felt anger, I felt anger with them and there was not one character I hadn't felt a little sympathy for.
With that said, there was never a book that made me weep as I read it..... save for one. I remember reading through this book and seeing all of the foreshadowing and piecing together the sad truth I would have to face in the end when Martin and his friends battle against the vermin of Marshank to put an end to the evil tyrant Badrang. Having read the book 'Mossflower' which takes place after this story, I began to realize that all of the events that took place in 'Martin the Warrior' are never mentioned once in the following story and with great reason.
I will not be describing the dark turn of events that had taken place 'less I spoil more than I have already have. Such a grand tale would have to be experienced by the person themselves whether it's by reading it or hearing it told to them word for word. I would say this is an absolute must for any Redwall fan, as the book explains so many things about the history of Redwall and its founder, Martin. Heck, I would recommend this to anyone whether they are a Redwall fan or not just 'cause this is such a wonderfully fun and exciting story from start to finish.

Yeah, kind of had my own canon in mind, where I believe she survived with only a concussion and married Martin... but so that the Mossflower canon still happened, they still finished up travelling (because his young adventuring spirit wasn't settled yet) but also Rose kept a low profile to preserve Noonvale's existence.

Heh, that sounds like a wonderful canon there. In my mind, I imagine when Martin passes away and crosses into the silent forest, his spirit reunites with all of his old friends and at the end, he finds his beloved Rose. They hug and he tells her about the fall of Marshank and the building of Redwall. After their reunion, he turns saying that he must go back to guard Redwall and guide the woodlanders there. Rose nods her head slowly, and says farewell to him as he heads back to Redwall and leaves her and her friends behind in Noonvale.

Ah okay... but then again, she later follows him to Redwall, I would think? Her spirit perhaps residing with the cutting from the Laterose that was planted in the Abbey gardens.

This Guardian of Redwall thing, too... whenever I play Martin making an appearance in some Redwall-themed RP, I tend to have him be a bit of a fourth-wall breaker - acting all casual one minute, then going into his "guardian spirit" persona to impart a message in the form of a riddle.
If questioned, he simply remarks that he can't give them any clearer messages, as the "Powers that Be" only give him a riddle to pass on, never explicit information... one of those strictly-kept rules among guardian angels is that they're not allowed to give too much away!

Yeah, it would make sense for her spirit to reside in the rose.

I can imagine, his melancholy spirit must feel so much more settled, having her around at Redwall now and in the afterlife...

This story scars all those who read or see it, Martin the Warrior. Such a tragedy. However because of this tragedy, is why the other events later unfolded the way they did. I am like you, I will give nothing away, but if the last events at the end of Martin the Warrior did not happen, Mossflower would still have that Castle Kotir in it, the cats ruling with an Iron Fist, and no Sacred Abbey to guide beasts on the right path.

Yes, as sad as the events were, they are what is meant to be. Such is the way of life, and as to change a part of the past -no matter how small or tragic- would alter the present and future to be less than preferable. Nothing is without reason or consequence, and frankly, you can't have good without the bad. Without the events that had taken place at Marshank, innocents would still live as slaves under the tyrant's rule and the woodlanders at Kotir would not have gained their freedom and built their abbey.
