Description thursday, 27/9/2001

Breathing becomes something like an obsession. Mimicking the dead, a grotesque habit. But I am afraid, and that is how I can fight my fears. This is the only way I know for the time being, or the only way I can think of.

I close my eyes, drift to an uneasy slumber. There is a road, I think. It is coming towards me and flows underneath my feet, but I have no sense of motion. It is the road that is moving, not I. When it stops, I see a shrouded figure at a distance before me. I have this vague impression that it is either me, or my grandfather. I feel a shudder course through my body as this creature passes through me, replacing me, and I wake up, unable to move or speak.

A somewhat older piece, painted sometime in 2003 (or early 2004?), and related to even older events.
Acrylics (powder paint mixed with acrylic glue) on canvas.

Included in Raster, Chapter #33.

This was also the cover for Laird Barron's The Imago Sequence , 2007, by Night Shade Books.

It does make sense, more so because it was something from a dream. With all your recent comments on old works (thank you!) I'm experiencing a strange nostalgia. I can see the technical shortcomings in these paintings, but I would like to be able to recreate this sort of, well, dreaminess, for lack of a better word. I had a very distinct imaginative/dream world in the back of my head when I was younger, and it's mostly frayed now.

That's so true, now that I'm practising my skills I have completely lost my desire to illustrate my thoughts, because back then I listened to a song and a whole comic came up to my mind, and I know that what I do know lacks the thing that makes me excited about art. It's empty. But what can I do? I must keep refining the technical part of my work in order to render what I want properly in the future, so...Sorry for my verbiage!

Yes! I'm in exactly the same boat! The light in the tunnel is probably at some point where one's skill is good enough to realise the things they imagine, the way they want to; just as long as we don't fall in the loop of 'need to do better', and keep focusing on technique while ignoring... well, that which makes art that speaks to the soul, somehow.

That's well said. I'll close this magnificent change of thoughts with your great comment on the topic, thank you so much, I was really in need of that.

Αν και το γράφεις πως έγινε εξώφυλλο βιβλίου, δεν το θυμόμουν καθόλου. Ώσπου πήρε το μάτι μου αυτό, luben.tv/wp-content/uploads/20… . Είναι τόσο χαρακτηριστικό το στυλ σου, που αμέσως σκέφτηκα πως θα μπορούσε να είναι δικό σου έργο.

This, and your words make me shudder - yet I am intrigued! Dreams so often speak of truths, or memories only half-remembered, buries into the subconscious..

I remain intrigued...

The text describes a very uneasy dream I had during the wake before my grandfather's funeral. I was tired and very grieved, which probably explains the scene. But then it sort of developed independently, into an eerie fantasy of its own.

Very, very interesting. It's extremely rare to see someone who's offering an opinion when they don't quite like, or actually hate something (I took a look at your other comments). Usually they just ignore such works, or might offer constructive criticism, where there's room for it, at least. On the like/dislike level, it's usually just liking that is expressed. That's a some food for thought.

Haunting; the piece already chilled me when i first saw it, and the writing that goes along with it deepened the feeling more. I love that the figures don't necessarily jump out at you immediately; they are more like subtle figures, mixing with the background until they see fit to appear. Much like ghosts.

Such a moody piece. I love the planes of green and brown and all the overlapping colors and textures that form them. The 3 figures seems to become second to the whole that is the background as they are there to compliment it. To me this is something unique. Of course this is just my interpretation.

Great job as always!

really, it hadn't occured to me like this at all. And you know, sometimes it nearly bothers me, how so many things in my images crop up by accident, or at the best completely subconsciously, and then they end up having importance and making a whole lot of difference. I then feel almost as if the image doesn't belong to me. (strange, I know).

lukavi In reply to eilidh [2004-11-19 23:02:47 +0000 UTC]

The image claims itself as its own This is great though, it makes it less predictable and far from stagnant.
