Your portraits of Melkor are unparalleled--you somehow create an overlay of deathlike horror over beauty. I don't know exactly how to describe it, but you've nailed it completely.

Hi EKukanova, I joined deviantart just to see if I can somehow buy this work. It hits me on so many levels--so destructively beautiful..Do you have a print available for purchase?

After reading the Silmarillion I went looking for images of Melkor. I wanted to see his portrait in the guise of a Vala. My expectations were disappointed, I always saw images in which he had a grotesque, ugly, inappropriate, appearance. I decided to portray him myself. I wanted him to have a noble appearance.
Finally I see a performance worthy. I never understood why Melkor does not appear as noble as the other Valar. I thank you for having done justice to this character, really a beautiful portrait that Tolkien would have appreciated! Great work ❤

It looks much like I'd imagined Morgoth to, and is a really impressive piece.
However, if this is Maedhros' hallucination while captive, where did the scratches on Morgoth's face come from? Weren't those given to him by Thorondor after Morgoth killed Fingolfin? He shouldn't have them yet.

Something I always appreciate about your artistry, Elena, is the way you deeply understand the character behind the description. You have wonderful technical skill, but you reach deep into the nature of the character in the way you wrap light and dark, symbol and metaphor, composition and color, expression and pose into an image of truth. Tolkien (and his friend C.S.Lewis) had a deep understanding of humanity, as well as true good and evil, which is what makes their stories, and the mythology they created behind them, so completely real. In your art, you tap into that sense of the real.
One characteristic of the deepest evil is that it has its own beauty, which is what attracts people to it. Your "monster" here doesn't look like a beast, or an overdone demon, but rather like a beautiful, heroic figure, while at the same time being probably the greatest evil in all of Tolkien's universe.
Amazing how his crown seems to be woven right into his forehead.
Your art makes my heart skip a beat...

Thank you very much for tis comment, dear friend! Thats absolutely right, the evil that Morgoth brings into this world was much more serious and deep then just a material destruction... Most powerful, most proud

yes. I don't remember all the stories that well, but it seems like he had an incredible way of turning friends and families against each other, of sowing a darkness which continued to spread even after he turned his attention elsewhere.
Wonderfully captured here.

We are having a conversation about this beautiful piece on Facebook. Is this image of Morgoth *after* the Fall of Fingolfin, or before, or some other time?
