Description Pen, ink and watercolor on paper
10x15cm each, 2007

Black Jack from "Black Jack" and Hyakkimaru from "Dororo" are (c)Tezuka Osamu
This work is featured in official online Tezuka fan magazine in Novenver 2007.

The 70's comic Black Jack is written by Tezuka Osamu, who also wrote Astro Boy, Dororo and other many many stories more than a hundred and now regarded as "god of manga". The short stories in this series are all based on the writer's experience and knowledge as a medical doctor and his great imagination.

However, this Black Jack is a Japanese surgeon who is amazingly skilled but always apply for a lot of money- more than 10,000,000 yen. It sounds he's a cruel person, but since he is a surviver from an accident, he knows how life is important and should be treasured much more than others.

As Black Jack has known for such a long years, Japanese people become to call doctors who are very well skilled and with passion as "Black Jack".

"Dororo" is written earlier than BJ and its main character "Hyakki-maru" is a unfortunate samurai who was born with his 48 pieces of body taken apart by demons because of his own father's selfish desire. To take back his lost parts, Hyakki-maru must fight with those demons when he grown up as a boy.

Later Hyakki-maru became a root of Black Jack and appear in "Black Jack" couple of times.

Great job on this piece, I especially love how great you did on Black Jack! Also awesome job on the watercolor coloring, it looks very pretty! Also I like the way you drew them both, they look Tezuka-like with a little bit of your own style.
Amazing job!

Absolutely Amazing. I am in awe of your awesomeness. @.@
I've become a fan of BJ and Tezuka's works recently, but, unfortunately, I still have to get more volumes of BJ and get Dororo (Because playing the video game isn't enough when it comes to interacting with the worlds and characters, in my opinion).

Thanks for your comment.
I love Tezuka Osamu's works so much that I put Astro Boy strap on my cellphone
I think Black Jack is one of the most famous manga in Japan because most of all libraries own it. As a matter of fact, I'd wished to be a surgeon because of BJ when I was in elementary school! lol
I don't play gamy games but Dororo's one of my important manga, too. Wish you'll be able to get a original stories soon

No problem. ^^
xDD
I have a Tezuka hat wth BJ characters, Rock, and Shogo on it (And Tatta, soon), that I wear everywhere.
I wish the libraries here had a lot of Tezuka stuff (All I can find is Buddha, everything else must be bought)
Blood Will Tell is addicting. :3
@_@
Dororo's pretty high up there on my list of books to get right now.
But I'm not sure that I'll be able to convince my parents to let me withdraw the money for it from my bank account, tho...
xDD

The hat sounds pretty cool. Have you made it?(Excuse me, I'm an ESL speaker )

I've never known that the Dororo game's called "Blood Will Tell". The only one Tezuka related game I've played is GBA's "Astro Boy Omega Factor" though. It is fantastic to contain tons of elements from all Tezuka works such as "Phoenix" and even "Jetter Mars".

Well, you don't have to worry! They won't run

I just finished it a minture or two ago, atually (I sprayed it with hairspray, and got the picture of Tatta on it). x33

Yeap. It's not the... greatest name when you're trying to sell the concept of getting the game to parents, but... xDD
I've been wanting to play Omega Factor, but I want to finish Chain of Memories and (maybe) get a new GBA or a DS (Because mine's old as crap and tempermantal... xPP )

xDD

I can give you an advise... Old DS can play GBA softs, but DSi can't.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

blindbanditofthesand In reply to elliegreco [2009-09-21 20:49:35 +0000 UTC]

Not a whole lot, really. I only play about... three or four games we own on a regular basis (KH, BWT, Tetris, and Sonic Anthology), other than that, nothing, really. Most of the information I get is from searching stuff on the internet. Like, I know a lot about Friday the 13th, but I've never actually seen it. xDD
Cool, thanks!
I'll be sure to ask you if I have any questions!!
I don't think I'll be asking about DSi, I'm probably not going to get one. ^^

ohhh I love how you painted this! *O* I always find watercolor to be a very difficult medium to work with, but you used it very nicely.

Black Jack was (finally) released in America several months ago, and I've become a huge fan. (I've been buying every new book that comes out)
I have to buy it online though because Tezuka's manga is very hard to find in stores. T_T

Meitou In reply to elliegreco [2009-09-12 03:01:39 +0000 UTC]

The translation is very well done. The quality of the paper it is printed on is wonderful too, which is sadly unusual because most manga in America is printed on medium or low quality paper. For example, the American publisher Tokyopop has switched to the paper quality seen in manga magazines such as Weekly Shounen Jump. They said it is because the recession, but it is still disappointing.

elliegreco In reply to Meitou [2009-09-21 15:05:41 +0000 UTC]

I like how American paperbacks weights, but in the point of manga, I agree with you. Certainly Shonen Jump qualitied paper(?) is awful for manga in book forms. If I'm on your side, I think I'll wait till they restore the paper quality, or simply run to a second-hand book store!

Hi, thank you for your comment!
Actually it took a while to decide how to paint Hyakkimaru's hair
I agree with you. The animated version of Black Jack was good, but I felt the lines are too hard. BJ21 is just too modern-manganized!
In addition, I strongly miss hand-painted animations...

Yes! I also wasn't so fond of the hat he was wearing in 21. Reminded me too much of Vampire Hunter D. @_@
And again, I totally agree with you! Digital animation today just doesn't have that charm...
