Description 2004-2005) 1-2" length, 18-24 gauge sterling silver wire, gemstone beads (from left to right: banded agate and labradorite; sunstone and moonstone; sponge coral, turqoise and Indian vintage glass beads; moonstone and garnet; faceted citrine; labradorite; lapis and bamboo coral; faceted carnelian; sponge coral and moonstone) bali silver and silver findings.

These are earrings I made over the last two years to complement a variety of necklaces and bead bracelets. Since I've moved from wearing my hair in a pony-tail to wearing it open they've been neglected a bit as they always get tangled up in hair now, which drives me crazy... The findings are really sold as clasp components for multi-strand necklaces, but work well with the earrings.

I guess my inspiration for the three-part construction was the amazing ear-wear they put on the empress Lucilla in "Gladiator". If you can peel your eyes off Russell Crowe for a minute check out her ears. (Yummy!)

The black stone earrings in the top left-hand corner... the triangular silver pieces... are those cones that you squished to be flatter? I can't tell from the picture.

I love all these earrings, though. They're really pretty.

Thank you! After "Gladiator" I had a big thing for the triple "chandelier" type earrings Commodus' sister was wearing, so I decided to make my own. The top left one actually had very solidly made flattened findings with three holes through them evenly spaced so the three dangles wouldn't clump. I only ever had four pieces - two became a set for my Mum, and two the set you see. I wish I could lay my hands on more... They were awesome!

There are some great pieces here, and inspiring too. I especially like the Coral-Azurite (I think...) in the lower left corner.

Thank you. I bought it as lapis, but it's such a uniform and intense blue, I am now suspecting I got duped and it's blue-dyed howlite...

Aww.. well it's really nice lapis, even if it is dyed howlite .

I think I like the upper left corner one the most.

Ever work with hematite? It's one of my favorite minerals even though it doesn't agree with me. Love the metallic shine it has.

Ellygator In reply to Aeires [2006-01-22 15:16:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I used to wear the ones you like a lot. Hematite is an odd stone for me. My Mum loves it, but I swear to you - I handle it for a while it makes me feel very odd and almost nauseous. (I know it's all in my head! LOL!) But unless my Mum's birthday's coming up I keep myself away from it, even though the metallic color is very fascinating.

Aeires In reply to Ellygator [2006-01-22 15:24:11 +0000 UTC]

Actually there's more to it than just being in your head. Occultists believe minerals have powers locked within them. I gave up on that way of thinking a long time ago. However, I do believe that our own aura's behave with the crystal matrix of minerals and cause certain things to happen with the energy fields. It's a common scientific fact that quartz crystals can release small charges of energy when squeezed and released so why can't other crystaline structures behave in similar fashions? Like I said, hematite disagrees with me in some ways and looks like you too. Be interesting to look at the atomic structure and see how different it is compared to common stones such as quartz, ruby, and diamond.

They say to buy copper bracelets for the magnetic healing ability but copper is non-magetic in nature. Sucker born every minute.

You know, that's an explanation I'd buy. It's really odd, because other gemstones really don't do anything like it to me, or my reaction is way more positive.

My favourite ones are the one at the right top corner: the stone with green spots remids to the heart with its continents!the ones with the azzure opalescen stone are very elegant. Labradorite? What kind of stone is that?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to Galhad [2006-01-21 16:06:09 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! The "earth-like" looking stones are turquoise. I suspect it was Tibetan reconstituted turqoise which is typically heavily veined.

Labradorite is Calcium sodium aluminum silicate, a type of feldspar. The opalescence is caused by the crystal structure refracting and breaking up the light (very much like the effect you can see with peacock feathers). Rainbow moonstones are quite similar, with the shiller effect, but white rather than grey or brown. I just can't resist either when I come across a lot with good rainbows...

i'd love to see someone do something good with byzantium. their style of art has always made it hard for me to picture the clothing and styles of the time. but it always looks so dramatic. (at least for the rich, as always!)

Heaves above, I LOVE dangly earrrings!!! Oh, these are all so gorgeous!!! My favorite are the labradorite pair--- love labradorite! That's areally cool idea, how you've used the necklace findings to add extra danglers!!

Just in case you're interestes, there's a marvelous bead store that you might wish to look at--- it's stictly mail-order, so the prices are very good!! [link] I am not affiliated with them, btw! I just happen to have received their latest catalougue in the mail today, and so have bead shopping on the brain... Anyways, those are GORGEOUS earrings--- if I saw them at a store, I'd buy the lot of 'em in a heartbeat!!

Ooooo, sparkly, sparkly goodness!!

Oh you too? I've got the Firemountain Gems catalogue on my coffee table, and it's dripping with drool! I have a wishlist out the wazoo for what I want. Thanks for pointing me to the website, though. I hadn't checked into that.

Thanks for the comments. Glad you like! Labradorites are just awesome stones.

Hey, a kindred catalogue-drooler!! The website is HUMONGOUS!!! I just ordered some stuff today, for some commission work for a friend...

Oh, you don't want to know what you did to me. I ordered a huge selection of gemstone, pearl and shell-strands and they have an excellent selection of 15s seed beads. I am so poor right now... Seriously, thanks for the tip. I never get off my butt with a catalogue, but internet is so easy.

Hope your stuff gets to you soon and is all you've been expecting and wishing for. Oh, and congrats on the commission!

Oooops... Sorry!! And you're welcome! Hehe, I am way too good at getting other people to buy stuff...

Thanx for your good wishes, too! I'm hoping to start doing some more commissions soon--- I may not be able to make much money off it, but I enjoy beading a lot, and perhaps I can just make enough to support my own beading habit!!

P.S. I can't wait to see what you do with what you ordered!

I hope your commissions take off, you have folks who give you good artistic license and who pay fairly. I'll definitely post me new stuff as it comes along...

Wowee! They are all so pretty! I gotta say that Gladiator is one of my fave movies because of the GORGEOUS costuming. I absolutely loved Lucilla's wardrobe and jewellery. Maybe I was a grecian princess in a past life? In my dreams!
Anyway, I'd have to say my fave would be the laboradite ones, because they are my favourite stones.
Oh yeah, and I'm more a Joaquin Phoenix fan. He makes evil dead sexy!!!!

Ellygator In reply to Apothacer [2006-01-13 14:44:46 +0000 UTC]

They are pieces of lapis, but I wasn't too impressed with them as they miss the little Pyrite flecks you often get and I love my lapislazuli deep indigo-blue.

Oh, to bad. I temember seing use of lapis at the Egyptian section of the metropolitain meuseam. I thougt it was real gold at the time. Did I mention I was 8 and in love with egypt. Havent cracked a book on the subject since. When the move "The Mummy" came out a few years later all my freinds were asking me to come see it with them so they would have their own personal egyptologist in the next seat.
