(2013), 9"x12", pencil on paperThis one is again based on the stupendous reptile photography of and was drawn with the permission of the photographer. Thanks so much!
The beautiful lizard in this photo is a Chinese water dragon. Their native habitat stretches from India to southern China and southeast Asia where they live in trees overhanging rivers or lakes. When threatened they will drop from the branches into the water and swim to safety. They are also captive bred and are quite often kept as pets where they thrive on a diet of crickets, mealworms, roaches and locusts. They can get quite tame when handled gently.

Well done, my friend! There is no polite way to say that scales area _____ to render correctly, and you have done yet another admirable job. If I were to offer any suggestion, it would be to soften/smooth the shading of his eye with a french stub or Q-tip to give it a softer, wet feel (especially once you bring the white highlights back with an eraser) to help differentiate it from the delightfully rough scales. But that's just me, and unlike you, I haven't the patience to draw a lizard--paint daubs are so much easier! *smile*

Thank you! This little fellow was a lot of fun to do, though m wrists do complain after a tour de force like that... Smudging while drawing in pencils is still one of the things I kind of want to do more of. Every time I make myself (the Lucius portrait or the Cersei) I am actually quite pleasantly surprised by the results...
