Description (2007) 5 1/2" x 10 1/2" Pencil on Paper. Processed and framed in Photoshop.

Well, I decided to use the four founders for the four aces as they started it all, so next up will be all the aces, starting with Salazar Slytherin as the Ace of Cups.

The books somehow jumble the symbols a little, giving Salazar a medallion, Helga a cup, Rowena a tiara and Godric a sword, but I went with the elemental configurations of the characters, and there Slytherin is Water, Hufflepuff is Earth, Gryffindor is Fire and Ravenclaw is Air.

Salazar is based on fabulous stock by

Huh, first time I ever saw a young Slytherin.

I know everyone draws him old and ugly/ evil looking, but he was friends with the others once, and shared their idealism for a wizarding school, so he must have been capable of being a friend, a bit arrogant perhaps, a bit too full of himself and his superiority over muggles, but I wanted to show him as he may have been then.

Ah, I see.

Just remarking because even though I have admittedly not dived deep into the HP fanart scene, I have a suspicion (a rather accurate one, it seems) that most Slythrrin fanart is him old and evil, with a white beard to match.)

Cool stuff!

But wait, what?  I always thought it would be ordered:

Slytherin = Pentacles <- They are the most shrewd.

Hufflepuff = Cups <- They are the most emotional.

Gryffindor = Wands <- They are the most passionate.

Ravenclaw = Swords <- They are the most thoughtful.

I've seen that arrangement of elements and houses and it makes sense, too. I chose Cups/ Water for Slytherin and Pentacles/ Earth for Hufflepuff, because of Slytherin's color, the fact that their dorms are under the lake and the fact that water signs probably have slightly more sinister connotations that earth signs (i.e. Scorpio). Hufflepuffs always seemed "down to earth" for me, live next to the kitchen (food and material opulence) and have the colors yellow and black associated with them.

I think it could go either way, and both arrangements have arguments to recommend them...

This is really nice. I love the way you did the snake. Personally I doubt the locket was actually Slytherin's... At the very least it did not have an S on it back then. The S as we know it showed up with the printing press. (Screams at JKR for mutilating history.)

Ellygator In reply to Kingsdaughter613 [2012-07-14 01:20:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the card actually shows a bit of the evolution of the images from the book: when I drew the card the final locket design as we know it from the movies had not yet been published (or maybe even invented), so for the design I went with the locket design that was printed on the British adult version of the actual books (I forget which volume). At the time I thought that they must have had some authorization from JKR so I used the cover as a reference. I guess this dates the deck somewhat. If HBP/ DH had already been out the locket would have looked differently...

Personally I like yours, though technically both lockets are inaccurate. (Yes, even the official one.) That's because JKR can talk all she wants, but the S did not exist during the Founders time... So obviouslty they were added later. Sal's locket MIGHT have had a Sigma (which looks like an E). The modern S appeared with the printing press...

It's a shame JK Rowling depicted Slytherins badly from the start... Because water is related to emotions, and, at least in my humble opinion, mind you, it's most developed level (kings and queens) is all about love and devotion and serenity. Please, feel more than welcome to correct me if I'm wrong!
And amazing drawing! I'm falling in love with this deck.

That's a really interesting topic you raise! In traditional Tarot the suit that often gets a bad reputation is the swords/air - cold, callous intellect with some pretty gnarly card meanings as well, like the 3, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10, which makes the suit quite dubious when it shows up in a spread. With the Books I had to assume Ravenclaw was the house associated with the swords and air, the clever people up in their tower and an eagle as their animal, which are mostly quite nice acually.

Slytherin with the digs under the lake and their silver and green snake had to be water, a suit that as you point out usually is quite positive, indicating love, compassion and deep feelings. While Slytherins do get a lot of the bad press, I also think given the full 7 books, we see some of the most amazing journeys of transformation undertaken by Slytherins, precisely because they have feelings: Snape sacrifices himself for the son of the woman he loved, Regulus goes to his death for his kindness towards a "mere" house elf, Draco cries over his dead friend, and Lucius and Narcissa risk it all for the love of their son. That's pretty strong emotional stuff.

On the other hand quite a few Gryffindors are not as golden as their colors make us believe: on some level Dumbledore is a calculating cold strategist, who will still make sacrifices on the altar of the "greater good", Sirius is absolutely ghastly to Kreacher and to Snape, and don't even mention Pettigrew...

I do like the subtle ways JKR played off of the traditional elemental meanings.

Mmmm his features are absolutely gorgeous! I love the way you did his facial hair. All of his hair, actually The way the shadows play on his hat looks very realistic, and that snake (basilisk?) is quite impressive.

Ellygator In reply to mollygrace [2009-04-20 12:53:48 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, I thought mostly because of their association with water: snakes, common room under the lake, green and silver...

mollygrace In reply to Ellygator [2009-04-20 19:03:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I can see that. I'm just think more along the lines of the general meaning of the suits. I would've thunk Slytherin to be Pentacles, maybe Swords.

Thanks so much! I have been working with tarot cards for a long time now, and I had always planned to eventually put all that I know into a deck of my own. I just never found a really compelling overarching theme, so when I started thinking about the Potter books, it suddenly all came together and from there it was just a case of getting into the details and figuring out who could be in what card. It was mad fun!

Best of luck with your trading cards project! Sounds like a cool project.

LOL! Thank you. I was done with all the ugly and old depictions of him out there.

ScarletJaguar In reply to Ellygator [2008-09-25 22:18:41 +0000 UTC]

Me too. Sure, he presumably did get old, but does he always have to be depicted so?

Anyway... I looked at you ref... and the fact that you used a ref entitled "A Noble Man" for Salazar Slytherin (and he looks so awesome) makes me want to say something Nietzschean and smart-sounding, but I can't think of anything appropriate

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to ScarletJaguar [2008-09-28 18:58:40 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. I did want some arrogance and conceitedness which probably he always had as a streak in him. He just made the mistake of not curbing that to a certain extent, and the pose of the young man seemed to express that just so well.

by the way, you draw amazingly!
how long did you take to do it? takes me ages in order to draw something more than satisfying!

Ellygator In reply to KaIsSaMira [2008-07-25 13:25:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! Actually if you have the patience to scroll through all the comments, the young man who was my reference for the drawing got the tip-off from another deviant and wrote a comment on the drawing. I don't know him personally, but he exists and he's a deviant just like us.

I was really tired of everyone drawing Salazar as old and evil. There was a time him and the other founders were young and idealistic and best friends. And I wanted that kind of person for the Ace, not what happened later... As for the drawing time, It was probably arond 10 to 15 hours over several sittings, the snake texture took the longest.
