Description (2006) 3.5"x2", champagne Swarovski pearls, red gold metallic iris size 15 seed beads, grey ochre-lined iris size 11 seed beads, slate and burgundy satin triangle beads, grey iris and rose iris delica beads, nylon thread

This cuff bracelet is done in brick stitch. I started with a fan around one side of the seed bead and finished the brick-stitch off with a picot edge on the outside. There is a similar piece in my gallery already, called "Serpentina" [link] which shows how the same technique can yield very different results depending on the color mix of the beads.

I have a piece in my scaps that explains the technique: [link]

Queen of Beads! This one is loverly, the snaking shape is great and it really looks like a mosaic. It reminds me somewhat of Moorish tilework, but with different colors and favoring curves to linear geometry.

Thank you! I love brickstitch and the ability to combine so many different size and shape beads. Definitely has something of a mosaic.

You've got a good eye for color choice; this version, and the other one you link to, Serpentina, both look very elegant despite the vast difference in color vibrancy and contrast. Good job!

Thank you! I'd done single fans before and one day was playing with the components when I realized you could make them as S curve combinations. One of those Eureka! moments...

I LOVE those moments. Where everything just seems to fall precisely into place. Woot!

How long did this one take you? They are sooooo detailed.

Probably around 40 hours. The worst is the picot edge... Your thread will snarl in the little triangles Every. Single. Time!

Beautiful work. I love your attention to detail...for example the pearlish looking beads, the piece would still look lovely without them but it really makes the piece look that much more interesting having them there. The different shaped beads really create a sense of texture which I also like.

Thank you very much! That's the really cool thing about brick stitch: you can just go crazy with as many different bead sizes and shapes as you like...

In those colours, it looks like it should be one of a pair, attatched to the cuffs of a big Elizabethan dress. * has been watching too much Sunday-night costume drama* I can see puffy sleeves and a great big full skirt...

Ellygator In reply to talyra [2006-02-07 15:00:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that would be gorgeous: beaded long cuffs. Then they should be going from the wrist all the way to the elbow, and then lovely puffy silk above...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

talyra In reply to Ellygator [2006-02-07 16:16:57 +0000 UTC]

WOW that would take some work I was seeing sleeves puffing out of the end of the cuffs, but that would be kinda cool too... if incredibly heavy

Ellygator In reply to talyra [2006-02-07 17:49:16 +0000 UTC]

It's not too bad, a piece of heavy brocade or velvet would weigh about the same...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

talyra In reply to Ellygator [2006-02-08 20:02:11 +0000 UTC]

The whole sleeve, up to the elbow, beaded like that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to talyra [2006-02-09 16:58:25 +0000 UTC]

Well, not saying that I'd do it any time, soon, but wouldn't that be stunning?!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

talyra In reply to Ellygator [2006-02-10 17:53:01 +0000 UTC]

It would... but it would only weigh the same as a bit of fabric, you think? Really?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to talyra [2006-02-10 18:03:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, probably not muslin... LOL! But a thick velvet or brocade, I think so.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

talyra In reply to Ellygator [2006-02-10 18:18:31 +0000 UTC]

I'd have thought it would be heavier, that's all. I am, however, no seamstress...

Good goddess, that is one hell of a fabulous color scheme.... Very antiqued, but also very elegant! Grey and burgundy is fantastic!!!! I love the design, it has a real 3D appeal, it just begs to be worn and fidgeted with... It's a really great idea to disply it in all the different views, one can get a much better idea of the piece that way!

That's a lovely piece! The colors in it are wonderful.

Speaking of pearls, years ago we went to some amusement place (don't remember where) and they had Ainu divers diving for oysters as an exhibit. I bought a pearl, and got a black one. It's really pretty!
