ETA: Most people seem to betting the right idea on what is going here, but just in case here is a short schpiel I put on my tumblr:

I was thinking about what direction each character’s bending is going to go, what new things they’ll show us we haven’t seen yet. When it comes to lightning bending… I see a lot of amazing pieces that demonstrate it’s power as a weapon. But just like fire, it’s both destruction AND LIFE. Our brains and bodies run on little electrical impulses, and when a heart stops beating, the right charge can sometimes bring it back.

When you take all that, and the idea that Mako strikes me as a character who potentially struggles with losing people he loves… I mean, who doesn’t? But his parents were slaughtered in front of him, and he’s expressed very clearly his awareness of Bolin being his last family member left. Anyway, it seemed like a plausible scenario for him to defribullate either Bolin or Korra back to life. Technically Bolin shouldn't be lax here--the charge should be siezing him up--but I took artistic license. We'll say it's RIGHT BEFORE that kick happens.
