Day 18: One of the many awesome things about storm chasing... every storm is different. And every storm has different stages. While this didn't turn out to be a particularly noteworthy chase, it was fascinating to watch this laminar inflow/base develop overhead. It left a "hole" in one area, making for a very strange scene. You can chase and learn all you want about weather, but there will always be some mystery left that makes you say "what/why the hell?"

Swiss clouds! Amazing! Riding to Sturgis in 2011 we encountered similar formation north of Casper Wyo. Fortunately it was about five miles east of us, moving parrellel with us for about thirty miles. Stressful and intriguing , beautiful to watch but not a pleasant thing to encounter on a motorcycle. Regardless it adds to the fun of the adventure.

Ha, yeah I can't imagine encountering a storm of any real magnitude on a motorcycle! Funny you should mention that, as I actually just secured a job in Rapid and will be relocating in a couple weeks

I saw something like this one year; but it was swirling, and a funnel cloud came out from beneath it; but it lasted only a few seconds and then it roped out. It left behind heavy winds though.
