Description This was taken in the late afternoon on Christmas Day, 2002. We had eaten dinner at the La Posada resort/train station that's being restored in Winslow, AZ, and afterwards my brother and I ventured outside to see what we could photograph--yes, there will be further submissions from this place, it's amazing

This gentleman wished us a merry Christmas and shared some memories of years past, when the railroad was in its glory days and was the preferred method of travel. Seems he was born in that town and remembered seeing movie stars, politicians (including presidents), and troops come through the station during the WWII era. He was ecstatic that someone was restoring the station and resort area to its former glory.

I hope this doesn't sound bad, but this is one of my favorite images taken in 20 years of photography The warm hues that the setting sun was presenting were amazing, and I'll never forget hearing the emotion in his voice as he told the stories. Gotta love folks like that.

love the sun streaming in through the arches...it creates a really nice rich calming glow over the picture. the old guy is really sweet, looks as if he sits there everyday of his life just watching the world go by, waiting for people to tell his stories too. are u sure hes not santa in disguise? i love the story that it comes with...sounds like one of them really magical moments that you remember for ages. beautiful

Haha excellent. I love idle aging men, who simply sit and watch the world go by, and always wear a curious grin. Nice architecture and colours, the sun always seems to be shining in your pictures and you capture the colours so richly, looks like a nice place to live.

Nice pic anyway, take it easy.

Nice pix, Pat. Used to love the old trainrides, too. Used to go back and forth from college for a nice reasonable price...met lots of interesting people, too, riding the rails. Some of my cousins are 4th generation railroad workers.

Your description makes this shot "total." There certainly seemed to be quite a bit of emotion coming from you too, Patrick Very, very nice The lighting in this shot is spectacular as well as the depth. Thanks for sharing . . .

wow, i love this. And i can't exactly say why, or what it is about. The shot is done rather well and the shadows are gorgeous, but theres something more to it. The man; sitting at the front of a long hall leading to what is beyond me. She puddle reflecting up. For being a very real shot, it almost gives me a surreal feeling. Very good..very good.

Wow... this is great. The man, that hallway, those water-reflections on the ground, both lightning and colors (i do like that blue at the end of the hallway, it makes a nice contrast to the rest of the photo and fits's good to the man's clothes). Wonderful photo.

The shot was taken on Christmas Day? hm... reminds me of Santa Clause.
A very nice perspective! The shadows look good and I like the reflections in the puddle and the lamp at the ceiling. The atmosphere is very friendly.
I think you shot this photo from the best direction!

i truly adore this photo. i understand completely the feeling that you had when you encountered this spirit. seeing this just makes me smile in that soft and gentle way.. the kind of smile that is borne from truth.

brilliant work.

I rarely come across photos which hold so much emotion for the photographer around here - this must be a treat for you to have - the shot itself is very good and full of warm light - great description to go with it - well done.

The way he's captured in the light coming through the archway, is really nice. Even the bench he's sitting on looks like it belongs there, just like him. Great shot, and great story behind it too .

there are times when we're given gifts because we are gifted - this is one of those times

this is the "perfect" photo is every way describable - i'm really at a loss here...your description adds so much to the picture's overall feel that it's quite moving to the senses...

Very nice work with the light and composure of this one. Also interesting to note that he is the only one in the photo, as if to suggest he is the last one waiting for a train that will never appear there again.

yes i can understand why that's one of your fav. captures. your latest pics were only scenery kind of pics. which impressed with nature's way od creating our world... or amazing panoramic pics of n.york. what these pics don't have is some sort of emotion... an atmosphere... or so... :-S i think you know what i want to say. i know how old people often talk, in excitement, about the old days. i'm quite the same way... when i begin to talk about old games or my time behind the wall (was born in former east germany). ENOUGH ... and i have the serious problem to write too much in some cases

a great pic... ->devpack

ps: i really like the reflections in that puddle there in the back

"standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona..." I can hear the song but forget who sings it...

I love this picture. It is so much like a painting in small view, but it's obviously not in large view. The colors are amazing and sublime. You're right to be proud of this one.
