Description Hm. Well, I wanted to draw her since the Meidou episode came out... so I finally got around to doing so. Huzzah! She just has a really spiffy character design.

I was so tempted to just use "Sessmom" as the title, but I managed to restrain myself and have a little bit of class (hopefully). XD

She's made the list of my top fave female characters. Sesshomaru's mother, Sango, and Rin are my faves.

Lovely picture.

There's one thing that fans confuse me about: Some people complain about her demeanor but honestly, her son's personality isn't too great either. I wonder who he got it from? lol

Yes indeed. That's why I can't understand why some fans are hating on Sesshomaru's mother and strangely not realizing that Sesshomaru himself acts very much like her.

Sesshomaru's mother is a very complexed character, it would be nice to see more of her character and see a backstory with her and Inutaisho. From being together to when he left for Izayoi.

CrescentNubila In reply to WhitePedal25 [2014-04-10 00:42:25 +0000 UTC]

Or perhaps InuTaisho ended the marriage himself by falling in love with Izayoi. Perhaps InuTaisho never left Sesshomaru's mother and Izayoi was a mistress. (Sometimes lords in that era marry their mistresses on the side.)

There's many types of speculation. However, we'll likely never know for sure what really happened between them.

WhitePedal25 In reply to CrescentNubila [2014-04-10 01:01:56 +0000 UTC]

I suppose you're right, but given how we saw that Sesshomaru's mother took joy in torturing humans and Inutaisho helped humans that can be a clue that they had a very rocky marriage because of those differences.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CrescentNubila In reply to WhitePedal25 [2014-04-10 02:57:49 +0000 UTC]

That could be true too, however it seems that they parted on good terms. That makes me think that it wasn't as rocky a marriage, but perhaps just a solid disagreement on ideals. During her debut, she never hinted that she hated InuTaisho and seemed to still respect him. She only called his sentiment for humans odd and that was the most of it from what I could tell.

You're on to something with their different views on humans, but I doubt that they were violent about it. I think InuTaisho wouldn't have given Sesshomaru's mother the Meido Stone if he wanted absolutely nothing to do with her.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WhitePedal25 In reply to CrescentNubila [2014-04-10 03:01:41 +0000 UTC]

Good point, the reason I think the reason in my opinion that they still respect each other not just because they are powerful beings, but are also being respectful to each other for the sake Sesshomaru since he is their son and they did end up splitting up.

And because Sesshomaru dislikes his mother, I assume something happened between his parents that would make him not pleased seeing her.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CrescentNubila In reply to WhitePedal25 [2014-04-10 16:58:08 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely. They both love their son and want the best for him.

To be perfectly honest, Sesshomaru dislikes (or at the very least tolerates) just about everyone excluding Rin of course. His mother's personality and demeanor are very nearly the same as his. He most likely got it from her. lol

I also imagine during that era, mothers in a royal family weren't allowed to be too close to their sons. (You know: the males are warriors, females are the homemakers, etc) Sesshomaru's mother probably didn't see much of him after a certain age. It's clear that she does care for Sesshomaru, but the tradition that they likely grew up in caused them to be separated. At least, that's my take on it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WhitePedal25 In reply to CrescentNubila [2014-04-10 17:03:35 +0000 UTC]

Ah I see, so even though they are demons they still had the same traditions as the Japanese royals.

Sesshomaru really seems detached from his parents, and not to mention he showed resentment and disappointment when he found out his father feel in love with a human and got her pregnant, and he believed that his father favored Inuyasha because Sesshomaru was born for political reasons and Inuyasha was born from love.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CrescentNubila In reply to WhitePedal25 [2014-04-10 18:19:55 +0000 UTC]

It's very likely considering the era that they lived in. I'm sure there were exceptions to the general rule though. (InuTaisho and Izayoi for example)

You're right though and I feel that the tradition may have caused him to feel detached from his parents and from almost everyone else. I highly suspect that Sesshomaru is deeply jealous of InuYasha for those very reasons that you and I mentioned.

It seems like his mother wants to show Sesshomaru that she at least still cares for him. She couldn't stand the sight of him being sad over Rin's death, tried to stop him from going to the Netherworld, offered an escape route from the Netherworld all because she feared for his life. It will never be a mushy, touchy-feely mother-son relationship, but Sesshomaru did learn a valuable lesson in the end. His mother's lessons/warnings helped him earn Bakusaiga. (Did I spell that right? )

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WhitePedal25 In reply to CrescentNubila [2014-04-10 18:30:18 +0000 UTC]

Yep, since Inutaisho and Sesshomaru's mother married for political reasons and had Sesshomaru they had respect for each other and I'm sure Sesshomaru's mother doesn't want to trap him in a marriage that has no connection between them, so she probably left him after Sesshomaru's birth since the whole marriage was about uniting two lands and Sesshomaru is the heir so it saved them from having a war.

Since Sesshomaru was raised to be a warrior and can't have a normal relationship with his parents because of traditions, he would resent them because of not having a relationship with them and the fact they had him for an heir. While they care deeply for him, Sesshomaru will need time to believe that while he still resents them a bit, especially since he wasn't sad by his father's death.

With Izayoi and Inuyasha, he hates it because he doesn't like humans and is digusted that of all the women his father could have for love since Sesshomaru's mother allowed him to find love somewhere else, he chose a human girl and Inuyasha has human blood in him and is able to have a relationship with his mother, something Sesshmaru never had. And he never saw his father and his dad died saving Inuyasha and Izayoi when he was born, Sesshmaru never had that much of a relationship his father and is repulsed that his father was trying to save a child that wasn't even born yet and never got to know.

I absolutely agree on all points made. It's really tragic when you consider all of that. Due to no clear, official explanation on the Inu family's relations, our combined theory makes the most sense. (Unless we get proven wrong somewhere along the line. XD All fans can do now is speculate on the unanswered questions the canon left.)

It's fun to speculate and theorize with a fellow fan! ^_^ Thanks for the engaging conversation!

I know, two people forced to be married when they don't love each other and the child is born for the sole purpose of royalty and nothing less. Sesshmaru probably thought that since he was born of duty and would be less if born somewhere else and thought people don't care, he decided to not give a damn about anything and shut everyone out.

My pleasure

Awesome! I had a feeling it was her.

Wow, the story is so sad but sweet, Inukimi is mad that her husband chose a human woman to have a real family with and was pleading for him to stay for Sesshmaru's sake. But sadly it won't happen.

Inutaisho only saw her as a close friend who is the mother of his child, and Sesshomaru doesn't want anything to do with his father regardless since he wants the swords.

It makes me think that Inutaisho doesn't see a family with himself, Inukimi and Sesshmaru since he is not in love with Sesshmaru's father and he couldn't see Sesshmaru because of tradition to train him and Sesshmaru became detached from his father and it hurt him.

Yes indeed. In a way, it's good that the Inu family relations are left to fans because I've seen some amazing portrayals however this other story I think tops the one I showed you. www.fanfiction.net/s/5927910/1…

I've heard many fans call Sesshomaru's mother by different names since her official name was never given for some strange reason. I never liked Inukimi though. I've seen Aimi, Takara, Misao, Matsuhime, Anri, and many others.

There was one older fan fiction story that named her Sessholara (which I absolutely love for her) and from the list above, I like Aimi and Anri for her too. It was a tough call, but I call her Sessholara since I like that one the most.

Yes, in other fics Sesshmaru's mother is a bitch who Inutaisho got so fed up with he left her.

A lot of fans tend to call her Inukimi.

I never liked that portrayal of her so I was happy when I found stories like those which gave off a different vibe.

I know, but I just don't like the name Inukimi. I know it's not an official name, it's something fans came up with for lack of anything else. There's a humor story where the author suggests that she kept her name secret on purpose to tease everyone. It's post-series and kind of AU. I'll link it to you if you want to read it.

To me Sesshmaru's mother might of once been a bitch, and Inutaisho put up with it because they are husband and wife since they were betrothed, but she probably slaughtered a human village and it was the final straw and Inutaisho left her, and probably left the pendent with her only because Sesshmaru is their son and will need it for his right of passage to be the next ruler. And after his death she began to change and started to feel remorseful and regretted hurting Inutaisho and not respecting his wishes when he was alive and when they were still married and thought if she was a bit better he wouldn't have left her and find love with a human (Izayoi) and had a half demon child with her.

Oh I see.

From witnessing InuTaisho's reaction to Izayoi, I can't see him leaving the Meido Stone with his ex-wife if she was so horrible to live with. And if she hated InuTaisho so much for his sentiment towards humans from the beginning, she wouldn't have shown so much respect when she spoke of him to Sesshomaru in episode 9 of the Final Act. She still loves him, that much is clear. Like before, I bet they were in an arranged marriage, but I think they grew to love each other over the years that they were married. Sesshomaru may just have been conceived out of love and for duty, but it got torn apart by InuTaisho suddenly leaving the family he had.

Consider this, perhaps her disdain for humans spawned from the fact that InuTaisho left her for a human princess. I sense that InuTaisho was a noble person and that he would behave like in the stories I showed you.

Sorry, I just can't see InuTaisho's first wife as a horrible mate. The respect she shows towards him even after his death and separation tells me otherwise as well as his trust in her by leaving the Meido Stone to help Sesshomaru learn and train. A husband wouldn't place such trust in a wife he despised.

WhitePedal25 In reply to Frotu [2013-07-05 17:56:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, my theory was that they were in a arranged marriage, Inutaisho being noble will want to make it work but Inukimi was a demon he could not tolerate because of her hatred for humans while he is trying to make peace with them while trying being a good husband for the sake of teh clan and for Sesshomaru. I think that she slaughtered a human village and he was so angry he called off their marriage and she moved away, and a year later he met Izayoi and found the real love of his life.

Since she doesn't seem to hate Izayoi or tried killing Inuyasha she might have realized what she did was wrong and would want Inutaisho to be happy with the new loving family he had created with Izayoi.

Frotu In reply to WhitePedal25 [2013-07-14 18:08:10 +0000 UTC]

It's always good to have head canons about stuff! I definitely agree that they were probably an arranged marriage. My personal head canon is that it was just a political thing without much emotional attachment, and they performed their duties (namely to have an heir) and then kinda went about their own business. That's why she didn't seem to harbor any negative feelings about Izayoi or Inuyasha, and why she just reflected on Sesshoumaru becoming like his father without seeming upset about it. She seemed more accepting of humans than Sesshoumaru had originally been!
