Description A Blue-Throated Bee Eater (Merops viridis) with an unfortunate dragonfly for its meal. These gorgeously colored birds subsist mainly on a diet of stinging insects such as bees and wasps (hence its name), catching them deftly on the wing and then returning to its perch where it first kills the insect by whacking it hard on the perch, and then flips it once or twice in mid-air so that the sting is positioned such that it would not harm the bird's throat while swallowing it. Thanks Kevin! The European bee-eater is an absolutely beautiful bird and one of the prettier of the bee-eater species. But the bee eater family are all such beautiful birds.
