Description Some of the first drawings to grace my new sketchbook...im going back to my roots here with colored pencils, which is really significant because this hasn't been colored or touched up in any way by photoshop (except contrast so it shows up more.) Anyway, kinda more of the same...

this completely blows my mind. i have a great love of lighthouses, and the shell structure is amazing. and the windows, man. i really, really adore this. please make more like this one, it is so gorgeous. i can't wait to see more scenery drawings by you, you have a seriously intricate and beautiful design pattern. ^_^

the light house looks like a mage house from ff9. I love how your colors are kinda pastel. it gives a neat stylized look to your art!

Thanks Sam!! As far as the video game quality, i would agree, although I'm not sure if thats the intent...but when I design stuff I always have this interactive quality in mind, as if the elements of the background actually "function" together like its a real place...kinda like it could be explored somehow by the viewer...but I'm not quite sure what thats gonna evolve into, whether video games or not.

Oh that'd definitely be nice to be making a livin' from this, maybe then I could afford to buy me a REAL giant shell house!! I can't wait to live in a shell.

Thank you very much! Most of these are very much inspired by very "real" influences, especially the amazing creativeness of the natural world...its something I think we really overlook sometimes!

Oh please do! I think your style is just wonderful. I admit I have almost more children's books than adult books...only my sci-fi/fantasy book population out distances my children's. I hope this comes across as a compliment. I'm just of the mind that more and more illustration work done for children's books are becoming more and more the better art out there...the style and imagination is what draws me to great illustrations. Especially so in today's art culture where so much garbage is being pawned off as art. No wonder Andy Warhol did his anti-art movement. *sigh* Things like the "Piss Christ" really disturb me. And now they're calling the art now Post-Post-Modern Art....wanna know why? Because there's nothing great behind any of it to better distinguish it apart as a movement.
*end of rant* sorry about that

Oh don't worry, we are definitely on the same page with this...I agree wholeheartedly with the mass distortion of what art is...arr lately I've been constantly frustrated by the lack of any true aesthetic (sp?) beauty in our popular culture...(of course there is alot of beautiful art being created out there, but if flies under the public radar for some reason) Hmm this topic would make a great rambling journal entry!! Well, I guess the only positivity of these artistic "dark ages" (hmm I like that analogy) is that it is supplying a huge amount of opportunity for those of us who are striving to have our creations shine amongst the rest. Hehe...sorry about that!

Calibizaro In reply to Goober02 [2004-05-04 19:15:41 +0000 UTC]

LOL....yes...this topic *would* make a good rambling entry, and in fact, I think a topic that isn't discussed enough. And I guess all the crap out there does make a little headway for the rest of us that try for something that has actual beauty, and there is a LOT of beautiful work out there.....but most of it does go to commercial venues....perhaps a real challenge will be how to get them into galleries... to oust out the shit that is put in there now.

But there is one problem that lies in aesthic beauty.......it can be absolutely gorgeous... but does it have substance? Style? and above all....meaning? Does it convey an important idea or thought or feeling? Maybe a story? Or is it just "pretty"? I think a great challenge would be to create something both beautiful....but deeply meaningful to wide audiences, telling a story or idea or feeling, and expressing so in a marvelous display of artistic skill......it's a huge challenge I think. But one that can be done if enough time and passion and self are put into it.

Wow........ I love the shell motif. The entire thing is a shell *looks amazed*. Ok, I've gotten over the shells for now. Now onto the coloring! wow...... I love your colring! Your color choices are wonderful and the shading is perfect. Now for the brain behind the picture. This is marvelous, you have a wonderful imagination. Have you ever thought about illustrating children's books? I think that you would do well in that field. Yess Yess. Good Job!

Thank you incredibly for the very warm comments on this...haha I don't know what to say I'm really really glad that you appreciate the imaginitive aspects, and I'd really hope to invoke the imagination of others through what I create (and yes, it'd be great if those "others" were children)...it would be alot of responsibility to communicate to kids through art, but I think I'm up for the challenge! Thank you kindly for the extra motivation!!

I really like the style of this! It gives a great feeling of space and atmosphere, and I like how the bottom door of it looks a bit like the end of a conch shell (whether it was intended to or not).

Goober02 In reply to Theriona [2004-04-30 01:49:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!! Yup, its an intentional shell I think the shell its based off of is called a Tibia, it has the lip with the little spikes much like a conch would, but it has a tall narrow spiral to it...haha probably more than you wanted to know, but there ya go

thats very interesting. I like the way you make use of pencil crayons. your lines are very detailed. also, the concept of the lighthouse, it being a shell, is very creative. great work, and its a specatular picture to grace your sketch book.
