Description One exhibit that I truly enjoy is the lorikeet exhibit. We lost our exhibit a few years ago and I miss it a great deal. My visit to the Cincinnati Zoo would not be complete without spending time with the birds. I had fun assisting some folks with their kids who were afraid but still wanted to feed them, so I was able to hold the bird for them while the child fed the bird. It was a lot of fun! I spent a lot of time in here! I liked the way this photo turned out.....

Hahahaha! No, this is in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA! They have a fabulous exhibit and when I visit this zoo, I spend a LOT of time in here just enjoying the birds and photographing! He's been identified by a friend as a Black-Capped Lorikeet.

What a pretty bird. I can see why the kiddies would be a little afraid. He has a pretty serious beak and could give you a good nip if he wanted to.

Yes, his beak is a little wicked looking. But this guy isn't the one that the child was afraid of. That one doesn't have this kind of beak, although every bird can still give a good nip! And their feet have a good hold on ya too which can get a tad uncomfortable for kids.

I can remember getting some serious nips from a parakeet my aunt had when I was little. Birds can be surprisingly feisty. You tend to think of them as just pretty harmless little things, unless of course you've seen Hitchcock's The Birds!

That movie terrified me when I was a kid. I remember laying in bed afterwards not able to sleep thinking about how the birds could get into my house so easily.

I remember watching the birds gather outside the next day after watching that film and getting up and going inside the house! Seems silly now, but it wasn't then!!!!

My god no, it wasn't silly then. That movie totally creeped me out. Even now if I see a flock of birds fly and then land lined up on a wire I get a clench in my gut!

Black-capped Lorikeet.

The Hogle Zoo had a bird exhibit of budgies a long time ago. You could buy sprays of millet for them. Last time I went back (years and yeeeears ago), there was a butterfly exhibit instead. At the Tracy Aviary, there's a walk-in exhibit of sun conures. You can feed them, hold them, etc. I don't know what the zoo has going on now, since it's been eons since I've been back. And far as I know, the sun conure enclosure is the only one at the aviary where you can interact. Well, except for the free bird show. I got to hold a green turaco for all of two seconds during the one I went to.

Ah, I should have known that you would know exactly who this guy is!!! Thanks for the identification. My grandmother had a budgie when I was a kid and I always loved that bird! Perhaps that's why I enjoy these guys so much. I like to just watch and photograph, although it was fun to hold and help the kids. I hate to see kids become frightened of the birds, ya know? I really wanted this child to see him as a nice bird, but he'd already become scared and the damage had been done.

I know how that is. I was at an exotic pet store a long time ago and there was a blue-headed Pionus sitting out on a tabletop perch. Something scared her and she jumped off the perch and flew down a shady isle of reptile supplies, and I heard a little girl squeal. I ran to catch the bird and found her flapping around with her feet tangled in the little girl's hair. Her mom was flipping out so I told her to just back off because she was making it worse by freaking out because it was making the bird even more afraid, and I grabbed the bird gently and got her feet untangled from the little girl's hair. She calmed down some and perched nicely on my hand and I knelt down to try and get the little girl to see that she was a nice bird and she just got scared and she didn't mean to fly into her hair. Her mom tried to get her to touch the bird's belly but the poor kid was a sobbing mess and wanted nothing to do with the bird. So I took the bird, I think her name was Jewel, back to the front and held her close until she calmed down enough to go into her cage, which is where the store owner told me to put her. It's sad when kids are scared of animals, especially when the animal didn't mean any arm. :<

Ah, that's so sad! It's bad for both the child and for the bird! You're right though; that child will probably be frightened of birds all of her life now. And it isn't the bird's fault!

That's a pretty lorikeet. I guess I should be pretty thankful that the Oregon Zoo still has their lorikeets. At least for a little while longer. Wish it was a bit more diverse. Green-naped and Swainson's dominate the exhibit. There is one blue-streaked, edwards, perfect, and two weebers. And a duvenbode and duve-hybrid but they're execptionally mean so they can't be in the flock.

I thought of you while I was in here. I don't know all of the diverse breeds of lorikeets and the young folks working in the exhibit didn't seem to either. This guy is quite a bit larger than the others with the green and/or oranges to them. He was a good sport at letting me get close with the camera; I've even got a shot of him looking at me straight on which is cute but I don't think the focus is quite right to post. I did have a real "connection" time with another little guy who couldn't quite figure out why I was standing there without food and without trying to touch him. You could just see the wheels going 'round in his head. I finally put my hand down on the pole/log he was standing on and he approached for a "taste" and I even gave him my camera to inspect. He checked it out too. But I got some really pretty photos of him as he was just so curious!!! I spent several minutes with him just watching him puzzle over me and shooting away! My own private model!

The babies are the greatest. They're curious about everything, and want to bite everything. I had one hanging off of my finger for the longest time just waiting for him to let go. I think he may have thought it was a game...
I've had one lorikeet land on my zoom lens, and a few more inspect the camera and bite on it some.
One seems pretty interested in hats too and was bemused by the string that was hanging off of mine.
I will totally take the lorikeet exhibit from my zoo if they have to move the birds. My backyard is bigger than their exhibit. I'll just need more trees. And less cats.
