Description This was taken last year inside the Lorikeet exhibit at the Cincinnati Zoo. Some young kids were feeding the birds with the seed sticks (the only way that I can describe them) that they use now. The Zoo used to feed the birds necter but now they use these sticks. Anyway, I think his blue head feathers are simply gorgeous!

Yes, I was being "chastised" by the population for only having a camera! One bird was, I'm sure, cussing me out! But I just love these guys and love this exhibit!

Brushtongues like lorikeets should always be offered nectar, because that's what they eat in the wild, among squishy fruit and seed offered at people's feeders. Lorikeets, cockatoos, cockatiels, budgies, king parrots and rosellas, among other parrots, are as common in Australia as backyard birds as sparrows are in America.

Yeah, I know. Wouldn't it be great to be in Australia and have these guys outside our backdoor? I didn't know the part about the nectar and I don't know why the exhibit took the nectar away. Perhaps they use the nectar to keep the seed on the stick.

They use molasses to 'glue' the seeds to the stick, and the molasses is as tasty as the seeds. To the birds, I wouldn't know. OR WOULD I? LOL

But for brushtongues like lorikeets, nectar makes up a large part of their diet in the wild. They feed off the same flowers that bees, hummingbirds and butterflies do, as well as fruit with soft flesh. Seeds and nuts are part of their diet, but their tongues are specially formed to gather nectar from flowers and fruit; they have bristles on the tip of their tongue, which makes it look like a brush. Hence the term brushtongue.

LOL I haven't, but if I was hungry enough I would brave cracking a tooth on the millet in the molasses.

Yeah, thankfully he was concentrating on that seed and not choosing to come after me! It was fun being in this exhibit this day because, since I didn't have any food (only the camera), I was getting royally chewed out by a huge bird population!!! A few times they did fly and land on my head; I guess that's one way to escape the camera!
