Description
The first big bad of the series, and one of the more intriguing parts of the whole mythology of the show. Plus, you gotta love that custom armor...Some people discount NMM as a villain because she used such kid's gloves in dealing with the Mane Six after talking a big game, but I always liked the idea that part of Celestia's big gambit was to have her sister use up a significant amount of her power to trap her in the sun, forcing the escaped Princess of the Night to take less direct methods in trying to stop Twilight and her friends. Regardless of her effectiveness as a villain in a children's show (a handicapped role if there ever was one), Luna's darker side remains a favorite... Love her Shadowbolts as well, even if she did technically make up the entire team herself. I'm really looking forward to revisiting her in Season 4.

Nightmare Moon is my favourite villain of the whole show. Chrysalis is #2, and she's not even close to NMM.

I stand by your theory, except that she's actually fighting Luna for control of the body as well, so any power she had is all focused on maintaining control, so you can't exactly do much in the physical realm.

Ah, my favorite villainess gets a nice portrait done by the same studio too, but it looks like someone forgot to put the sun logo.. oh.. OH! Yes, Mistress of the Night, your moon is lovely and there should be no other resident of the firmament on your card. I love her sharp-toothed expression here because it says that she's bad and nasty and all but at the same time she'd never actually hurt anyone. Maybe that's even scarier because it means she'd be much more creative in her badness, but either way most know better than to mess with her.

A tip of my hat to you good sir, because this is by far your best Portrait! I feel as though you nailed the essence of this character 100%. Everything from the glaring eyes to the evil grinΒ was done with such finesse and attention to detail I can't help but marvel at it. And indeed, I like that little piece of knowledge that Celestia sorta set Nightmare Moon up with that gambit. It's very much Celestia: act from behind the scenes, perhaps indirectly, but have a direct and tangible effect on the course of events.
