Al parecer existe posible evidencia de que algunos perezosos terrestres (notrotéridos) pudieron haber sido hábitat de algas que crecían en su pelaje, como en los perezosos modernos, lo cual les habría teñido de color verde, y quizá habría alojado también polillas y escarabajos especializados que vivían en su pelaje y cuyas larvas pudieron haberse alimentado de sus heces. En otras palabras, éstos bichos habrían sido ecosistemas ambulantes, y quizá muy bien camuflados. En los perezosos modernos las algas también proveen nutrición extra, ya que el perezoso la consume mientras se acicala. Mientras más polillas y demás bichos viven en un perezoso, mejor su crecimiento de algas, ya que cuando mueren, sus cuerpos proporcionan nitrogeno que las algas necesitan para crecer.
Éste doodle está inspirado en el Nothrotherium maquinense que era una especie pequeña, más o menos del tamaño de un perro grande, y al parecer de hábitos semiarborícolas, que vivió en lo que hoy es Brasil en el Pleistoceno.

Apparently there's potential evidence that some ground sloths (nothrotheriids) may have been home to algae that grew on their hair, as in today's tree sloths, which would've tinged them green and likely harbored specialized moths and beetles that lived in their fur and whose larvae fed on their feces. In other words, these critters may have been wandering ecosystems, and very nicely camouflaged. In modern sloths, the algae on the fur also provide nutrition (the sloth consumes it while grooming). The more moths live on a sloth the better the algal growth, as the dead moths provide nitrogen the algae need to grow!
This doodle is inspired by Nothrotherium maquinense which was a smallish species, about the size of a large dog and apparently of semi-arboreal habits, which lived in what is today Brazil during the Pleistocene.
