Gray crab-caps are near related to the big beak-cap (Scidacappa crassi) but this fit into a very different niche.
They are nocturnal and living in the mangrove forests of the archipelago. They are specialized on hunting small crabs, which coming out of their hiding places during the night at low tide.
They fix their prey with the big claws at their feet, crack open the armor of the animal and kill it with an single strike into the central nerve system.
Males build special nests to attract the females. They use the crab claws, legs and parts of the armor to build a (fetid) small lair on a sandbank which is even during the highest tides out of the water. Because places like this are rare in the mangroves, the crab-caps tend to be very territorial.
