Description Grand-parents and grand-children....

It must be one of the most precious relationships on this earth. Not having been fortunate enough to know either set of grandparents, I always feel I've missed out big time when I see visions like this one.

There's a lot to be said for the joint family system, which still exists in India to some extent. Hope this special lifeline never dies out....

I love this picture... It really made me smile and giggle when it came up! Good job choosing B&W, it really brings emotion into the picture. The way the grandfather is looking at his grandchild is just so cute and sweet. It really shows the special relationship between them!

I really like this shot which does so much justice to that special grandparent - grandchild relationship. There is so much tenderness and trust. And the love is so apparent on Grandad's face. My only criticism is the bleached out sky and lost detail in the shadows; especially the little tot's head. I also might crop in closer to remove that sky. But that's my opinion and I still feel really moved by this

Hi Penguinclaw....

Thank you so much for writing in - it's much appreciated. Your comments were all very valuable. I took note of them and sorted a couple of things out on photoshop - the first time I've ever used this software, and that too, with a friend holding my hand and showing me the ropes on how to do minor adjustments. Hope you approve.

I know the sky was bleached out, but there wasn't much I could do about that. This pic was taken in Rajasthan's Thar Desert, at the peak of summer, when the temps have already risen to +40 degrees celcius (104 F) before 10 in the morning!! Also, there wasn't much time to take this pic - literally did a 5 mins pitstop whilst on my way to meet some other families.

Lastly, thank you for faving this still....

Wow +40 degrees is way too hot for me!!! I have been recommended the use of neutral density filters as a way to get more detail into difficult skies. I haven't got around to purchasing them myself yet (finances!!!!) but they came highly recommended. I have now purchased a polarising filter which can reduce the harshness of our sun's light.... I guess doubly important in the The Thar Desert. I hope this helps.... Also if you don't own a copy of Photoshop, try GIMP (stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program). It's completely free (to the extent that you can view the programs files and modify them) and is a great substitute for Photoshop. Just Google it and give it a go.

Keep up your great work!!!!

PS Yep the improvements do a good job Like I said a lot of the time I believe it's in the eye of the beholder which is the perfect image. I paint and I sometimes have to force myself to stop, otherwise the image becomes over complicated and fussy.

Hi there....thank you for all the suggestions. The filters will definitely help, and they are worth buying - I'll look into this straight away. But I can't get the hang of these software programs like GIMP and Photoshop. They all seem very complicated, and if you don't know what you're doing, it can ruin your pic, I think....

I think I'm much better off just adjusting the levels a little in iPhoto - at least I know what I'm doing. In any case, I never want to change the look of the image too much from how I originally captured it.....that's just me....

All your comments have been very helpful...

Yes you are right and a true purist, which I really admire. One thing you may also want to try (which won't degrade the original quality of your image is to shoot in RAW mode (that's if you camera supports this). You can then play with the exposure settings etc to your hearts content (probably using software that comes with your camera) and not reduce the quality as can happen when playing with jpegs. I found the easiest, and with my eye, often the best adjustment is to use the histogram part of the software and adjust until the entire graph is between two upper and lower sliders. This sounds complicated but believe me it's one of those things that's much easier to do than explain

Once you're happy export to Jpeg etc and upload to deviant art.

ps I always keep the original RAW files as a backup..... that way I can go back at a latter point and try something new. After all most of the time you can never recreate the original shot. Hope this helps and I'm not saying stuff you already know!!
