I had an animal anatomy class a while back, which was one of the best things I ever did; it was fun, and it really help me get better.
When we had birds as an assignment, I was lucky because several Red Shoulder Hawks live around my apartment. The three in this picture are all different ones. The one on the top-left had just finished eating a mouse when I decided to sketch him. The bottom hawk was grooming and preening, that's why it's feathers are all puffled up.
I drew them in pencil as quick as I could before they flew off, then put shadows and details on the feathers later with a pen. I sort of made up a pattern for the spots from memory, but they turned out OK.
