Description This illustration was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast for their Dungeons and Dragons - Monster Manual Book 4, which is out this month.

This creature is a small clockwork device.

I am usually given a description to illustrate but for this project they let the artists design the monsters and then wrote the text around them. We were just given a vague brief like evil plant or lizard creature. It was really cool to work like this. I created 9 monsters for this book. This is probably a very bad comparison, but the face kinda looks like Diaboromon (or however you spell it) from the Digimon movie.

If that existed, I'd be scared to go outside because of it's stinger. *shivers*

OMG. My nephew asked me if I ever played D&D since I'm like..old. I told hims yeah. I began printing maps and looking for books in the stores for him to use for refference and I saw this pic the other day. Great job getting the commission for something that will be around for a very long time. That's so cool.

I like the design of this one. Escpecially the mask. I like the lack of actual features on it. Reminds me slightly of the comedy & tragedy masks in theatre. I like the green parts of the wings also, it gives an almost stained glass effect.

There seems to be a tend in D&D to bring in more magical mechanical type creatures. The Eberron campaign setting has a lot of mechanical devices in it.

This sucker looks like it wouldn't fare terribly well if it rained! I'm sure it has some kind of magical protection.

Anyway I love the way you used the colours in this piece. Especially in the face!

That's a very good point. Maybe it is made of a metal that doesn't rust, or maybe it needs a lot of oil and polishing to keep it running.

Wow! I love the detail and coloring in this piece, it really brings out the subject. The face reminds me of Lord Voldemort in the fourth Harry Potter movie (which is not quite as good as the book, and you do dragons better than they do ). It's like a robotic cross between wasps and pure evil! I love the wings, they look like they have a gold base structure with stained glass windows in them Beautiful work.
