I have purple and light purple striped snakes like this. About the size of a pencil. Its cute next to your watermark it looks like a movie poster from the 50's. Attack of the 50 foot snake.

I've gotten conflicting id's and then while trying to figure it out from a California snake site I got even more confused The trouble with the internet...too many choices! But it probably is a garter...red-sided or valley or

I sure that little Racer will find a winter home under a log or wood pile. During the day, many of the local snakes wander onto the pavement to warm themselves. I have seen snakes in December. I live above the fog in the Sierra foothills.

I think this one was out on the gravel of our garden We're at about 1500' so were at the edge of the fog line (where are you? we're off 50 and 49) I quite fine seeing these or the kings but I am very glad for the rattlers to "go away" lol

I know how you feel about the rattlesnakes. I usually kill a couple rattlers each year inside the office complex. I live and work near 108, 4 and 49.

we've only been here (near Placerville) for three summers - the first we had 15, the next 7 and then this summer only two...we're hoping the diminishing trend continues we've got close to 8 acres on the edge of a large cattle ranch so we'll let them be out away from the house but if they're close then we catch them...releasing those that aren't aggressive way far away

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Changeling-seeker In reply to kayaksailor [2010-11-13 05:54:48 +0000 UTC]

I hope that trend continues for you and your family. I work out at an old mine. There are allot of snakes here. IF the snakes are in the wilderness, I leave them alone. IF they are in the buildings, they usually die. I used to catch them. Then I had one four foot rattlesnake get away from me. I could not believe how a snake that big could disappear in an office. Needless to say, everybody was on edge in the office for over a month.
Out on the roads, I usually stop to look at what snakes might be warming themselves in the sun. When they are in the wilderness, the snakes are in their home. I usually leave them alone.

OK, you've piqued my interest - where do you work?

The most recent one required my husband to take the deck apart (well one riser of the stairs off ) our daughter has a 'grannie flat' off our non-connected garage and this snake was in the garden where she needs to walk to get to the main house...he wasn't going to let it get away!!

I would hate to have been in that office!!

Changeling here.
There are some snakes that are aggressive like that! I have had educators tell me that does not happen.. it does. Those kinds of snakes deserve to be captured and let loose VERY far away from people.
I just say it is an decommissioned mine. I have a few photos in my scraps of animals I have photographed near there.
