I've seen my share of these little cuties over the years (my cat drudges them up).  You're dead on with the Sharp Tailed snake determination.    Super harmless, if you hang on to it, try crickets.

We've got a 'catch/photograph/release' policy at our house  Started that when my daughter was really young (at that time it was a 24 hours release) otherwise she would have wanted to keep EVERYthing

It was so cute!  Our cat is an indoor cat now - too many rattlesnakes, coyotes, bobcats, poison oak, foxes etc...but when we lived in Southern CA they were inside/outside and would bring us darling little California Ringnecks - which are very similar in size to these

Where are you that you get them?  The wiki article said they have a spine at the end of their tails, we didn't see that but it may be due to being a young one...

I'm in Northern Cal, about 3000', in the mountains below Kirkwood.  You've got a young one.   I believe the spine is formed from shed skin accumulating.  (It's not like a stinger or bony protrusion, just stiffer than the rest of the body really).

We're practically neighbors!  I'm 1400' southeast of Placerville a few miles outside of El Dorado...

The size and lack of spine made us think that it was young...pretty interesting adaptation!

Awww! This is so adorable! I don't even know anymore. I just... THE CUTENESS. IT IS TOO MUCH! (I have some kind of odd reptile fetish...) Ahh, my heart doth beat for all that is scaly and reptilian!

Gorgeous photo here! I really love how you simply focused on the face... it gives the snake such sweet and innocent qualities! It must be those little beady eyes!

(also: I do believe it is a common garter snake!)

At first my daughter and I thought it was a new born, racer or garter being our thoughts too, but having done some more searching and following other's leads, I think it is the Sharp tailed snake...this snake, amazingly, is full grown!!  It is so cute and tiny

You can get the size perspective by realizing that it is on my kitchen counter and is laying on the grout line of the tiles and you can see the entire five inches in the shot

Oh, really? I have never heard of Sharp Tailed snakes! We don't have those in my province... why? I want them
here.

Really? Full grown at five inches? Wow, that IS really tiny.. but tiny makes cute!   (well, sometimes.)

We hadn't either  I read more - born 3-4 inches, full grow at 8-12"  so this is a young one

(where, approximately, in Canada are you?)

Oh, really? Well, the fully grown length is still pretty tiny compared to some snakes!
(Around the Alberta/Saskatchewan area. But I just did some research, and it appears that they have Sharp Tails in British Columbia!)

Sure took her a long time to get here...hard to move too fast when you're only five inches long

I agree!!  While it was smaller than the adult 8"-12" it may have been a young one  The range and our habitat agrees with wikipedia  Thank you!!

Oh sorry...  Looks like a Garter Snake to me but then I am no expert and usually my stubby legs carry me far, far away before I can get a good look at a snake

I didn't know you were a 'fraidy cat!!  This thing was so tiny it would have only been able to nibble on your ear tiny little mouth used to eat slugs and such

and garter snakes are darling!  no need to whack them
