we're on a fairly steep hillside so this was about the only way I could get it looking at me

A brilliant picture and a brilliant documentation of the shot.
I am afraid of snakes - didnΒ΄t it bite? Any poison?

LuckisGONE In reply to Pachydactylus [2014-01-14 23:52:55 +0000 UTC]

They aren't poisonous, but they do have a mild and highly complex venom. Β But, don't worry! Β It doesn't harm people, it's prey-specific.

Β These little guys are very docile - no biting and not poisonous! Β I would NOT be doing this if there was any danger...for instance I would NOT do it with the local rattlesnakes which are poisonous Β Thank goodness for zoom lenses

Thank you.
We donΒ΄t have only a few snakes in Europe, so I canΒ΄t distinguish.

Looking forward to more shots!

There is a wide variety of snakes here in my corner of the US but luckily the only poisonous are the rattlers who aren't aggressive. Β You really have to piss them off for them to strike - or maybe accidentally step right on them...I've unknowingly step over one a couple times only to hear the rattle as I'm mid-step Β  We usually have a half dozen or more of them around the house during the warmer months, we "relocate" them if at all possible 'cuz they really do a good job at keeping the rodent populations down...we just don't want them by the house! Β Here's my "critters" galleryΒ kayaksailor.deviantart.com/gal… with more snake shots along with other critters... most of these are close to my home (we live in a very rural area with almost 8 acres - next to a large cattle ranch so lots of "critters" )

kayaksailor In reply to blind-dancer [2013-03-27 01:44:11 +0000 UTC]

we're lucky to not have too cold of winters, but even so the snakes do disappear for four or five months...so seeing the first little garter or gopher or King is always fun. Really don't like seeing the first rattlesnake though as that means we have to be much more careful out in the fields...

And the only dangerous snake we've got around here are the rattlesnakes and you wont catch me doing this with one of them!!

kayaksailor In reply to hokeywolfe [2013-03-19 03:31:31 +0000 UTC]

We can never figure out (or remember ) if it is a racer or a garter so I did some research just now...can't get a definite answer but it is a garter - maybe a Valley as that's the only one that has the red spots AND the yellow stripes but the 'net images make them look like they're greyer than "ours"...made the garter determination by garters having a strip down their spines while racers only have them on their sides

It was really cute
