Description Or more properly, Der ErlkΓΆnig.

If you don't know of this poem, go here .

Something that's been stewing quietly in my head a while, and finally chose a couple nights ago to insist on being drawn. An experiment of sorts; I'm usually so married to lines (liiiiiiines, I love them so~~), but knew I wanted this to have a hazy, indistinct feel, so I simply started scribbling and built up tone slowly. I love tortillons, I would just like to say.

8x5 inches, graphite (ebony pencil, specifically) on illustration board.

Ah, of course, I know this brilliant poem first read by me in childhood in the Russian variant by Zhukovsky. Ominous, beautiful, classic refined spirit of gothis beauty. Your art is absolutely stuning! yeah I understand u, I also prefer working with lines... so what u did here is even more increadible! It is like drawing a dark dream,a Β forest nightmare. U know, some people claim that their video surveillance system registered a ghost's shadow. Funny. But you really DREW this spirit. Gosh, I am so much surprised, your art made my evening.
Respect.

This is great!!
I can't look at this and NOT hear the blunt, thunderous roar of a pipe organ belting this song out!!!!
It captures both the essence of the poem and the song perfectly!!!!

I'm really liking all your black and white artwork. This one I find particularly haunting. I read the poem thanks to you. It's terribly sad, very German I guess? One way to see it is that the Erlking is Death personified. The child sees his own death coming and inevitably succumbs to it. The father ignores that nobody is too young for Death. And how do you even represent Death, not in its consequences but Death itself?Β Ever-present in its absence, it is always possibility,Β Death is indeed Life's constant shadow, finally claiming it, piece by piece, back into nothingness. Forever shrouded, veiled, the nothingness has no face. Relentless, always catching up because it was always there. This is what I see in the illustration and the poem.Β

On the Dutch TV there is a program about classical music. Each week they tell about known or more unknown composers and artists and their work and music. They also invite each week one guest who will sing an (old) song or aria: and this week there was a famous comedian who personaly requested if he could sing "Erlkoning" by Schubert, who based his song on the famous poem. I was completely blown away by his performance: a. because him singing this showed a whole different side of him and b. the song is extremely hard to sing, because you have to play four different characters: the little boy, the father, the Erlkoning himself and the narrator. Here is the link to the performance: [link] (it is sung in German, but not that difficult to understand)

And if that performance wasn't enough, three days later I stumble upon your bone chilling and beautiful drawing of the Erlkoning himself, and it fits so well with the atmosphere of the song. This song and your drawing are now forever in my mind bonded together and I don't regret that connection in the slightest, although it will propably haunt me in my dreams tonight

So this is one gorgeous piece of art and it sure must have been fate that I found this after getting to know the poem. Thank you so much for making it and I love it to death

Chilling piece. If you like Labyrinth, the movie, you should check out the Erlkonig fanfiction by Subtilior. Way creepy but fantastic. It's not a fluffy piece by any stretch of the imagination but the movieverse meshes with the myth very well I think.

I found this through a weird series of coincidences, and in short, this is fantastic and beautiful, and it is COMPLETELY relevant to a story I am writing with ~avalonauggie , the one linked in my sig. Since we operate it through tumblr, we're always on the lookout for related pictures to post there... Would you mind if we put this up? All credit to you, of course.

Let me know. Wonderfully done!

This is quite nice. At first I thought you might be illustrating a scene from a Yeats story, as this feels like it belongs there.

Something comes from the woods, Father, but perhaps you are too old to see it.

The atmosphere really is incredible. I look forward to seeing where else you get lead.
