Description So here is the greyscale version of the same drawing, so you can see the details of the pencil work. I also uploaded it in color.

So I was pondering drawing Howl anyways, but then I received a request from a friend to draw him partially in his feathered form....this turned out to be trickier than I first imagined! Doesn't look enough like him in my opinion, I should have started by drawing him normally, and then tried this version, but it was fun to draw anyways, and I learned a whole lot!

Oooh, I hope you do! And yeah, aren't you supposed to want to slap him sometimes? Hehe. My favorite line of his is "It's not worth living if I can't be beautiful" *giggles madly* He's such a freakin drama queen!

Oh, that he is! I love him to death, but my word he can be such a baby there for a time. That's one of my favorite lines from him too. He gets better as time goes on. I will add him, methinks! I just need to make sure it looks good on the computer before putting it up; the camera botches the lighting, something fierce. >.<

Ah, do you not have a scanner available? It's really hard to get good pictures of pencil work. This one would have been impossible, because of all the dark work. It always goes shiny grey on the camera.

I do have a scanner, bit it's only for the standard sized sheet of paper (8x11) I have to use the camera for anything bigger. Mine does the same thing if I use flash, so I have to turn the flash off and hold extremely still, which is a pain, but after a while, it works. I would scan them if I had a big enough scanner, but until then, I will have to stick with trying to get the best picture possible. I always alter them in photoshop afterwards to make sure they show up. If the pic is too dark, I lighten it, and then "burn" it to make the drawing easier to see. If it's too light, I burn it and such to dull it down a little.

What about instead of doing that, you take several scans of it in segments and then put the pieces together? That way you have better quality over all, and you can just use photoshop to hide the joins?

The problem with that is my works are dome on 14x17 sketch pads, and when any part of that is scanned, it turns out really dark and blurry. >.< I wish there was a better way to do it, but for now I guess I'll have to stick with the camera, which is fine when the pics come come out blurry.

Oh wow, that's a huge sketch pad! The largest I can scan is 11x17 and I've got one sketch pad that's larger than that. I have to be careful not to go edge to edge, or I can't scan it.

Fantasized-Teravan In reply to Kessira26 [2012-05-29 20:28:21 +0000 UTC]

Yup, and sometimes it seems too small! Hehe. You must have a larger scanner. Of course, my scanner can scan documents a little bit bigger than typical 8x11, but not much; 14x17 is way too big.

Thanks! I'm a little frustrated though, neither of the scans shows that each and every one of those feathers is actually detailed like...well, like a feather. Argh!

DestatiDreamXIII In reply to Kessira26 [2011-10-21 00:40:04 +0000 UTC]

Awe, I know what you mean...sometimes, the scanner seems to make all the details just disappear. But...your drawing still came out amazing and with plenty of detail anyway ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kessira26 In reply to DestatiDreamXIII [2011-10-21 14:28:45 +0000 UTC]

Usually the scanner does a good job at picking up my detail work, but I guess this was too subtle even for it. It's really black on black, or grey on grey work, so I guess I can understand why it didn't.

Well, I was talking about the other two I did this weekend in the note. This one isn't bad...it just doesn't look as much like Howl as I would like it to. All that time spent making him look softer, softer, softer, and he still doesn't look soft enough, *sigh*

superyummycupcakes In reply to Kessira26 [2011-10-19 23:58:03 +0000 UTC]

i think its the nose that's bothering you. Miyazaki doesnt like to draw them too big (or at all for that matter) does he? haha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kessira26 In reply to superyummycupcakes [2011-10-20 14:10:59 +0000 UTC]

You should have seen the nose I started with!! Hehe. Yeah, no nose, very minimal lips usually, and very large eyes, all of which have to be normalized. Sometimes I can catch it, and sometimes I can't. Ah well, I still think this turned out pretty.

Ooooh, very very pretty! I Howl soooo much, been meaning to draw him too actually ^^ I agree that it doesn't look exactly like him, but I think you did a beautiful job regardless, the nose looks really lovely and his eyes look really forlorn but also so pretty!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kessira26 In reply to YumeNouveau [2011-10-18 17:30:08 +0000 UTC]

I think I'll need to work on a front view of his face a few times (and probably fail a few times) before I start getting the hang of translating his face, just because it is very stylized.

Ooooh! I want to see your version of Howl!! Please, please, please!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YumeNouveau In reply to Kessira26 [2011-10-18 18:41:52 +0000 UTC]

Well, Miyazaki does make his characters look more classically anime-like than realistic, so I can see how that would be tougher to translate. It's hard for me to tell what it is that makes this look less like Howl, but I still think it's really really well done. I know it's an obvious thing, but Howl is almost always smiling, so maybe if he had that cute grin on his face it would look more like him.

Hehe, Howl's on my list of guys to draw...I just finished Haku from Spirited Away, so will probably draw Howl soon, but gotta draw my OCs in between so they don't feel neglected, poor babies

Kessira26 In reply to YumeNouveau [2011-10-18 18:49:58 +0000 UTC]

Yes, yes, and since I love your OC's too, I agree you must draw them frequently, hehe.

Yeah, sad dispirited Howl you only see a little.

Will have to do grinning charming Howl next, hehe!

YumeNouveau In reply to Kessira26 [2011-10-19 03:26:10 +0000 UTC]

I try to find a nice balance between fanart, which I <3, and my OCs, who I miss if I don't draw them often

Howl is such a cutie! I can't figure out if I love him more as a blond or with dark hair. OMG I just love when he throws a hissy-fit after his hair is dyed the wrong color! He's so cute no matter what, dispirited, grinning, or throwing a tantrum

Kessira26 In reply to YumeNouveau [2011-10-19 13:35:56 +0000 UTC]

My favorite scene in the whole darn movie. "It's not worth living if I can't be beautiful" So freaking hilarious! And then when Sofie has to haul his slime covered self up the stairs, and his towel drops! Hehe! Her face!! It's priceless.

I like his hair better tousled, and I like it better black than blonde, but he's cute with the tousled blonde hair too. Hehe!

YumeNouveau In reply to Kessira26 [2011-10-19 16:49:18 +0000 UTC]

Wahahah, I KNOW! Silly Howl, you're hot no matter what your hair color is! But I totally love that look on Sofie's face too when the towel drops... staring at Howl's hot butt I wouldn't be able to resist a peek either

I know I like the tousled hair look better too, I don't like when he cuts his bangs straight across, but am totally torn between the hair colors, but am leaning toward dark hair too I think

Kessira26 In reply to YumeNouveau [2011-10-19 16:59:46 +0000 UTC]

Me either! And it's a cute rear isn't it? Hehe. Even covered in slime.

Gah, I know, not the straight across bangs look! Fortunately it appears to take Howl's hair all of two point five seconds to grow out from that cut, so it doesn't stay that way. Phew!

YumeNouveau In reply to Kessira26 [2011-10-19 21:07:48 +0000 UTC]

Ya....Howl's got himself one nice butt, so happy Miyazaki finally created such a hot bishi!

His hair goes through so many changes in 1 movie! I wonder if he changes it by magic or something...I never actually read the book I should do that someday!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kessira26 In reply to YumeNouveau [2011-10-19 21:34:44 +0000 UTC]

I read the book...it's even more scattered and confusing than the movie, but interesting too, and it does clear up some things (Like why Sofie went out into the waste when she was cursed, it was actually to find her younger sister who was apprenticed to a witch). I think that Howl's hair changes whenever he takes on bird form, which he does pretty frequently.

Oh, and yes, Yay for a hot bishie, hehe, with a cute...and round butt!! Heeeee!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YumeNouveau In reply to Kessira26 [2011-10-19 23:31:02 +0000 UTC]

Haha, oh really? I thought the movie was just confusing, kinda weird that the book is too and Miyazaki still liked it enough to translate it to an anime! Ah, that makes sense, didn't know why she'd go a wandering like that. Still not clear on the whole turnip-head scarecrow that becomes a prince at the end

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kessira26 In reply to YumeNouveau [2011-10-20 14:26:30 +0000 UTC]

Well the book has it's charm, and a lot of the ideas are really interesting, it's just confusing is all.

The turnip-head scarecrow is a real simplification (in a good way) of what went on in the book. See the whole reason for the war that's going on, is that the Prince from the neighboring kingdom came up missing. In the book he was cursed, and part of him was in the dog (replaced by Heen) and part of him was in the scarecrow...it was really confusing...even having read it...well, I'd probably have to read it a few more times to figure it out.

One thing I did really like from the book, that wasn't made clear in the movie, is that Sofie is actually talented as a witch as well, she's just never been trained. So she's been unwittingly adding spells to her hats. That is part of the reason the Witch of the Waste made such snide comments about her hat shop, and it's part of the reason why it's OK for Sofie to do some of the things she does (like take Calcifer out of the Hearth).

Hmmm, OH, and they changed Markel's name for no apparent reason. I've forgotten what it is in the book, but something simple.
