Ah, do you not have a scanner available? It's really hard to get good pictures of pencil work. This one would have been impossible, because of all the dark work. It always goes shiny grey on the camera.

I do have a scanner, bit it's only for the standard sized sheet of paper (8x11) I have to use the camera for anything bigger. Mine does the same thing if I use flash, so I have to turn the flash off and hold extremely still, which is a pain, but after a while, it works. I would scan them if I had a big enough scanner, but until then, I will have to stick with trying to get the best picture possible. I always alter them in photoshop afterwards to make sure they show up. If the pic is too dark, I lighten it, and then "burn" it to make the drawing easier to see. If it's too light, I burn it and such to dull it down a little.

What about instead of doing that, you take several scans of it in segments and then put the pieces together? That way you have better quality over all, and you can just use photoshop to hide the joins?

The problem with that is my works are dome on 14x17 sketch pads, and when any part of that is scanned, it turns out really dark and blurry. >.< I wish there was a better way to do it, but for now I guess I'll have to stick with the camera, which is fine when the pics come come out blurry.

Oh wow, that's a huge sketch pad! The largest I can scan is 11x17 and I've got one sketch pad that's larger than that. I have to be careful not to go edge to edge, or I can't scan it.

Thanks! I'm a little frustrated though, neither of the scans shows that each and every one of those feathers is actually detailed like...well, like a feather. Argh!

Awe, I know what you mean...sometimes, the scanner seems to make all the details just disappear. But...your drawing still came out amazing and with plenty of detail anyway ^^

Usually the scanner does a good job at picking up my detail work, but I guess this was too subtle even for it. It's really black on black, or grey on grey work, so I guess I can understand why it didn't.

Oooh, that could very well be the reason then.

Well, I was talking about the other two I did this weekend in the note. This one isn't bad...it just doesn't look as much like Howl as I would like it to. All that time spent making him look softer, softer, softer, and he still doesn't look soft enough, *sigh*

i think its the nose that's bothering you. Miyazaki doesnt like to draw them too big (or at all for that matter) does he? haha

You should have seen the nose I started with!! Hehe. Yeah, no nose, very minimal lips usually, and very large eyes, all of which have to be normalized. Sometimes I can catch it, and sometimes I can't. Ah well, I still think this turned out pretty.

Thank you so much!! It was fun, but rather challenging. I wish that the detailing on the feathers actually showed in the scan....

What I want is a computer I can use to morph the two scans together in some way....but since I'm borrowing the work computer, and they have no such helpful program...

I think I'll need to work on a front view of his face a few times (and probably fail a few times) before I start getting the hang of translating his face, just because it is very stylized.
Ooooh! I want to see your version of Howl!! Please, please, please!

Yes, yes, and since I love your OC's too, I agree you must draw them frequently, hehe.
Yeah, sad dispirited Howl you only see a little.
Will have to do grinning charming Howl next, hehe!

My favorite scene in the whole darn movie. "It's not worth living if I can't be beautiful" So freaking hilarious! And then when Sofie has to haul his slime covered self up the stairs, and his towel drops! Hehe! Her face!! It's priceless.
I like his hair better tousled, and I like it better black than blonde, but he's cute with the tousled blonde hair too. Hehe!

Me either! And it's a cute rear isn't it? Hehe. Even covered in slime.
Gah, I know, not the straight across bangs look! Fortunately it appears to take Howl's hair all of two point five seconds to grow out from that cut, so it doesn't stay that way. Phew!

I read the book...it's even more scattered and confusing than the movie, but interesting too, and it does clear up some things (Like why Sofie went out into the waste when she was cursed, it was actually to find her younger sister who was apprenticed to a witch). I think that Howl's hair changes whenever he takes on bird form, which he does pretty frequently.
Oh, and yes, Yay for a hot bishie, hehe, with a cute...and round butt!! Heeeee!

Well the book has it's charm, and a lot of the ideas are really interesting, it's just confusing is all.
The turnip-head scarecrow is a real simplification (in a good way) of what went on in the book. See the whole reason for the war that's going on, is that the Prince from the neighboring kingdom came up missing. In the book he was cursed, and part of him was in the dog (replaced by Heen) and part of him was in the scarecrow...it was really confusing...even having read it...well, I'd probably have to read it a few more times to figure it out.
One thing I did really like from the book, that wasn't made clear in the movie, is that Sofie is actually talented as a witch as well, she's just never been trained. So she's been unwittingly adding spells to her hats. That is part of the reason the Witch of the Waste made such snide comments about her hat shop, and it's part of the reason why it's OK for Sofie to do some of the things she does (like take Calcifer out of the Hearth).
Hmmm, OH, and they changed Markel's name for no apparent reason. I've forgotten what it is in the book, but something simple.
