This one was just a sheer joy for me to do. I've got a print of her second drawing of this guy on the wall in my kitchen. I just adore him! So I was happy to do my own version of him, even if I did push him towards my style perhaps a bit more than I should have, hehe.

I'm happy to go through the process. It's not hard, it's just time consuming, and quite a few steps.

I used an 8B on his hair, instead of my normal 6B, mostly because I broke my last 6B, and I've been using a stump of one to draw with. I hold the pencil at a real angle to the paper, so that it's the side not the tip that is touching, and I used long strokes to map out the front part of his hair, starting from the furthest outside. I did these sweeping strokes to outline where the locks were going, then I went back, and shaded them in, but using long stokes, all going the same direction as the hair. I then went in, and with softer strokes, I did the space between where those locks fall, and his eye/eyebrow. Then I used heavy strokes more on the point, to define the edge of the locks again, and then the point to add some darker lines in. I then did the lock that falls over his nose. First with very angled long strokes, creating the shape (I have most of these kinda mapped out first with light pencil, and as I draw the face, I try and leave those area's blank, so that if I need light highlights on the hair I can). Then again, coming back to fill in, and then some quick point work to define further and add detail. I worked this way across his forehead until I reached the hair curving the other way, then I switched my paper around, and worked on that hair. It's tempting to make the strokes all uniform, but you actually want to vary the direction that the hair is going slightly, so I'll make some wander this way and that a bit. Once I have it all in, I take my blending took, and go over the whole thing, and I'll even take the time, to add a bit of extra shading in some areas, and define the locks a bit further. Then I take my mechanical pencil, and starting on the left at the outside again, I start adding the detailing. Again, I use long strokes, only in one direction. At the ends, I add lots of fine hairs. Varying the pressure on the pencil will leave some looking finer, and some thicker. I also take this time to fill in any highlights that look wrong, and add fine hairs in between locks on the face, etc, to help blend. Tadah! Completed hair. (Now, hair like Grimmy's was a good 3 or 4 more steps, but Grimmy's hair gave me nightmares).

WOW that's a long way! I feel really honoured that you shared it with me. Still a little dazed after re-reading it for 3rd time lol. Guess it's just too hard for my thick skull.

You aren't useless at all, you just need lots of practice.
It's really important to map out at least a general idea of where you want the hair to go first. That makes it easier to visualize where the shadows should go.

Well, sometimes that can yield interesting results as well, but...hehe. Honestly, I learned to draw hair from doing horse portraits, mane, forelock and tail. It's really important to stay with the grain of the hair when doing your shading, and detail, etc. That's really part of what makes it look like hair.
Actually direction of work is really important with my style of semi-realism pencil work. Something as subtle as the direction you are going with your pencil or blending tool while shading, can really make a difference on shape.

Do you know how I create the roundness to the cheek or the jaw? It's all about adding some shadow, than then blending it in curving strokes going the proper direction. I can subtly push something in, or bulge something out, just by changing the direction of the curve I'm shading with.

I see...So it all depends on directions... Hmm...

Yes, and this is true whether you are working with a pencil or a blending tool. Lighter and darker (which is just pushing harder, or making more strokes, or pushing lighter, making less strokes), and direction of shading.
