Description So get this: Until I went ot submit this, I was calling it a Pteradon. Isn't that funny? Ha!

I am so proud of this model that I went and took 4 pictures of it at differant angles. Much like the beetles. This is probably the hardest model I've done to date that I'm happy with the result. I mean, the Kamiya Bahamut and ancient dragon are harder, but I screwed that up so up to now, this is the hardest one I'm happy with. And boy was it hard. Also, I could have shaped this for the rest of the week in all honesty. there is just so much to shape on it.

Ok, I'm messing with you. I would characterize it as complex, but at the lower end range. When I hang this, and I will hang it, I will take a new picture without my hand in it and replace this one.

Also, I know I've mentioned it alot before, but this is the same model hanging in the Redpath Museum at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. If you are ever in the area, check it out (Entry is by donation, so I encourage oyu to drop in a couple of dollars, but no one's forcing you). The one he did is to life size, but this one is really tiny. Also, this one is blue. His was brown. Anyhow, enough talking.

Amazing! I've been about to fold this model too and wondering what color I'll choose, when I saw your folding! Blue Pteranodon is great and your folding's very neat. Congrats !

If I can ask, are you satisfied of using double-tissue for this model (perfect for paws and others details I guess), or will
you recommend the use of a thicker paper?

Well then, I'll fold an orange one at first...maybe doing a pteranodon full pack after...Hihi, you inspired me!

The only real downside to ever using double tissue is (well, there's two) are that it is more costly since I have to make it myself, limiting the supply I have, and that reversing folds are not as easy. The paper is thinner and more compressable, and less likely to tear. This results in better heads and hands since many layers of tiny details are easier to bring out. I think it could probably be done with thicker paper, probably up to commercial grade origami paper. I wouldn't try it with copy paper. You could also try with tracing paper. The transluscence of the wing was something I was going for. So yes, I would say I am satisfied with the use of Doubletissue for this model.

Looking through your gallery, you already know all that though.... Very well folded pheonix! I've tried it a couple times now and I still can't manage it!

Thank you so much for your answer! That's true that I'm practicing origami too, but in fact, I've never maked up my mind to do nor use double tissue, in fear of tearing everything. Then, I use simple tissue, which allowed me to fold the phoenix by the way. But a thicker paper like craft is good too, cos' with the simple tissue, the phoenix can't stand by itself. I guess i'll have the same problem for the pteranodon. Let's see...

Using a translucent paper for the pteranodon is a brilliant idea. I'll try it too and post the result.

Happy folding =Kessukoofah !

I would say that if you can fold the pheonix with tissue paper, then you can probably fold anything with doubletissue. I found it much harder to tear and took pulling strain (like when folding a large number of layers at once) rather well. Much better than when I tried with just one sheet of tissue.

I did try with craft paper (all the ones with brown paper in my gallery) and I found myself dissatisfied with it. It frayed too much for my taste and refused to hold detail. I've seen some people get it to work for them, so the problem is probably my impatience, but if doubletissue works for me, I see no reason to stop a winning formula.

Happy Folding.

Okay. Got it. Then I think I have a try. Just need some MC and go for
double tissue making (dreaming of bicolored pheonix )

WoooW

Is that your invention? Or have you found instructions somewhere?

Kessukoofah In reply to KingsOfEvilArt [2010-12-22 15:21:13 +0000 UTC]

No, this one is not of my own invention. It was designed by Robert Lang as a gift to McGill University. I would say in the decription if it was my own, or where I got the instructions.

by the way, I totally agree. It is an amazing model.

I love how you folded the claws and the head - it must have been really difficult with tissue paper!

This isn't just tissue paper. See, it's doubletissue (also known as MC I think). which is two sheets glued together. IF I had tried this with just TP it would have ripped and fallen apart many times over, but the glue and the two sheets really create a soft material that's easy to work, holds a crease well with and honestly doesn't want to rip. I tried to rip a small piece of the scrap I had left over and it's really difficult (relative to ordinary tissue paper and even standard A4 printer paper.) It acts more like a cloth in that respect.

I'm happy you like the model. Those claws and the head could have kept me busy for a week just shaping them.

I've never heard of doubletissue (but then again, you did mention it in your comment but I applied the literal meaning.. ). Is this your preferred medium?
Great job, anyhow! It's very lovely.

I keep commecial paper around for scrapwork and first attempts at things (since I still have so much of it left from my last paper run), but right now I'd have to say that yes, this is my preferred medium. It's a little tiresome since I need to make and cut it myself, which is a long and boring process, but the upside is that I can do whatever size and colour square i need to. And honestly, the medium is awesome! It holds a crease fantastically, it's flexible and has a bit of stretch to it, and it's more compressible then any other paper I've ever seen. [link] is a link to the process of making it (bear in mind that I used spray glue between two layers instead of liquid glue on top, but same result). Only problem is that spray glue is ridiculously expensive for the amount of paper I get out of it in the end, so I'm looking into trying to find some Methyl-Cellulose. It's not easy...

I dunno if there's anything better out there, but if there is I'll find it eventually. (I hear [link] is better, but I can't afford that yet. I hope to be able to get a sheet before it runs out though).

It looks very time consuming on the video! I hope you find the Methyl-Cellulose (there's a source here [link] - but I'm no expert. ^^) and the origamido papers you're looking for. Good luck!

Oh my god! I've been looking for that for a couple of weeks now! I'm gonna order some right away. For now though, I found some spray glue at half the price of the last can I got, so I'm gonna give that a try and see what happens. I also have some adhesive used to bind puzzles together that I'm going to try.

Didn't notice that this morning when I took the picture, but you're so right. It does. Maybe I should name him "Pils" (I spelled that exactly as I wanted to) after the Dough Boy...
