...so I did this photo-realistic painting of Erik. Does it give YOU stomach pangs? It gives me stomach pangs.
OF GLEE.
I think I've sufficiently outdone myself with this yes. This ISN'T a photomanip: I painted this bitch by HAND. Well, tablet but you get the idea.
I've only ever done two other photo-realistic drawings/paintings before, and they were given no where NEAR as much love as this was given. I wanted to do a painting, that would look like a very old photo, of a guy we don't even have a picture of.
Did I do it?
The idea behind this was: "What if Erik allowed himself at any one point to be photographed?"
I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have, but what IF? This is the result.
I imagine him being coerced into sitting for a nice, understanding and intrigued daguerrotypist (technical term for someone who does daguerrotypes...?) only to change his mind after seeing the resulting photo, killing the guy and stealing of with it afterwards.
So...does it convince your brain too that you're looking at a photo and not a painting? I have this set as my desktop background and I've been avoiding windowing out because his eyes grab mine and I end up feeling eerily like someone is actually staring back at me. >
I SWEAR TO GOD late last night, I hallucinated while working on this and SWEAR that this fucker BLINKED AT ME. Final note: I DID use old daguerrotypes as reference to get the general quality of one down, I spent around a week or so OBSESSING over this painting, studying every little fine detail about a daguerrotype that I could, in order to produce the most realistic picture possible. I wanted his expression to be pained, slightly angry and wanted his posture to indicate that he REALLY DID NOT WANT TO STAY A MOMENT LONGER, but at the same time he was restraining himself from bolting.
MY.BRAIN.IS.SPENT.

Woo-hoo!! As usual, your artistic commitment and talent has paid off, Kilderok. This is seriously unbelievably impressive! I had to google Daguerrotype to understand what it was you were doing. I think this came out beautifully. It has that dark, almost film-like quality to it...like it's slightly opaque or something. i dunno, the words escape me now. But I really like it and I know you worked so hard on it. Bravo, bravo, bravo!
Of Erik, I like his lips, eyes, neck, and eyebrows. I freakin LOVE his eyebrows and how they're arched!
Ah, Erik. Had it not been for his lack of nose, sunken eyes, and general pallor, i would think you truly handsome. Am I strange for thinking that he is handsome here in spite of his deformity.

XD Yeah, I have my hand in the antiquated. I know a lot about the 19th century and how FUCKING SURREAL it was compared to today. COMPLETELY different world in a lot of ways. So naturally, I've researched Daguerreotypes. Do you know about post-mortem photographs? It's where if they didn't have a picture of the deceased in life, they would make the deceased LOOK alive and take a photo of them before they buried them. ISN'T THAT FABULOUS?? Google THAT shit if you haven't already seen them---it's high octane nightmare fuel. Because the person staring back at you in those old photographs...IS DEAD. BUT LOOKS ALIVE. SOMEWHAT. JESUS 1800'S, JESUS.
XD You know, since it never describes his eyebrows, I took a little bit of liberty there, since I know all about bat wing eyebrows (my whole family has them), I decided to draw them like that, ESPECIALLY since I know firsthand how expressive high arched bat wing brows can be. THEY'RE PRETTY LEGENDARY YES. My dad has the BEST eyebrows ever, so I sort of based Erik's on his. It's even genetically accurate since my family descends from French folk, amongst a couple other nationalities. 
I DO think he's handsome, albeit in a not-so-obvious way. I never look at appearances absolutely when deciding whether someone is appealing or not. As far as appearances DO go though, anybody who makes me say "WOW" for whatever reason, gains my approval externally. And internally if they're even MORE complex and deep a person---well that's an automatic A+. So yeah, handsome. I approve.

I HAVE seen those freaky ass pics of dead people! They are so creepy and fascinating at the same time. I wonder what it must have been like for the living relatives to take a picture with a deceased family member. That must have been hard emotionally for them, or maybe not. Maybe they were used to it/expected it.
I have arched (or bat as you say) eyebrows, too! They are great and very expressive. I even have a small widow's peak as well.

Oh DUDE, I am SO happy to have caused squee. It makes me squee. :3 Have you seen the colored version I did of this yet? I really think THAT turned out lovely. I added further details to the vein work, it's my desktop image and it's made me jump a few times. MOSTLY because the after image of it lingered when I looked away from my computer and it looked like he was GODDAMNED STANDING THERE, glaring at me. So...perfection.
