Description "The Fiji mermaid (also Feejee mermaid) was an object comprising the torso and head of a juvenile monkey sewn to the back half of a fish. It was a common feature of sideshows, where it was presented as the mummified body of a creature that was supposedly half mammal and half fish, a version of a mermaid. The original object was exhibited by P. T. Barnum from 1842 until the 1860s when it was destroyed in a fire."   - wikipedia...(but trust me, the story is legit)

This was a lot of fun!  Found the monkey online from an image search, and the fish body was from an old illustration in a book.

Thank you very much!  I deeply appreciate that.  This is one of my favorite pieces.  And it came together easier than anything I've ever done.  Just quick, BAM!  And it was over.  Then I just sat back and stared at it in disbelief.    "Seriously?!"

That sounds awesome! I wish drawing could always be that easy- I have the tendency to agonize over every decision, haha

Seriously though, this is really wonky and peculiar, in a good way. Winning!

I usually have the same problem.  Over-thinking every single pen stroke before they're even laid down.  That's why I love this lil' guy so much.  He just swam out of my fingers and onto the paper.

Thanks for checking him out!

Honestly man, I'm not sure!  I'm still kind of shocked it came out of me.  It was one of those really rare pieces where my brain shut off and the pen just took over.

Barnum was a bit of a freak but had no idea stuff like this went on display. Freaky, cruel but kinda interesting as well.

It's definitely interesting, that's for sure.  Here's the story behind the whole thing if you feel like it.  It's an intriguing read:  www.museumofhoaxes.com/hoax/ar…

Thanks for sharing that! Although it does make one ache for a time where mermaids could commonly believed as plausible. Barnum and co may have been a bunch of devious scammers but there is no doubt it brought alot of imagination and wonder to folks. (Although the ethics of fishermen butchering apes for art is a bit questionable)

Mysticism is kinda dead now.  Thanks internet!     ....let's just assume both animals were dead before they got the idea.

Mysticism is dead, long live poorly constructed conspiracy theories!

I shall agree to assume they were both dead first, that is best.

OK, weird idea for a drawing, but really nice job with it.  The fur looks really good.  Sometimes when people try to draw like every hair, it just comes out looking tangled and jumbled, but this holds together really well.

Yep, it is pretty weird, ha ha ha.  I enjoy cryptozoology quite a bit (sasquatch, Loch Ness Monster, el chupacabra, etc.). A sincere thank you.  Fur has always baffled me, but this time I just decided to go for it.  Kinda wish the fish part would've had better depth to it, but no biggie.
