Finally a new picture in my fairytale series!
The original idea for "Beauty and the Beast" was something else entirely - but then I wanted to experiment with more dynamic compositions, so here you go!
I had lots of fun with the colours.
I hope you will enjoy it!

[EDIT] Updated with a better colour editing, closer to the original drawing. Enjoy!

" width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="387" title=" (Wink)"/>

First of all I'd like to say I've always been keen on the fact you illustrate fairy tales, which is perhaps one of your most cherished theme, and you're approaching them in a more mature way which i like.

What struck me is that this picture is probably tad darker than most of your other artworks and the most complex by it's symbolism (imo) :

The idea of a gaunt face beast works well reminding he must face his death to reach a higher moral level and experience a true love for Beauty instead of only desiring to possess her.
In opposition you've hidden Beauty's sweet face, and she seems to be looking onto her heart, where's the true beauty
Nice recall of the tale's moral : Appearances can be deceptive.

Regarding to the composition itself, you managed to represent what can be frightening in the Beast and his envirronement as well as all the gentleness and the love he can feel for Beauty.
Like that almost leafless rose bush serving as a jewel case for their embrace shows how fragile beautiful things and love's thing can be.

I also love the way you split the artwork in two parts, a light one and a darker one, recalling the dichotomy of the two heroes of their respective symbolism (and their completeness)
[beauty / bestiality. spirit / body, male / female, as well as light / dark, solar / lunar]
One cannot exist without the other etc ...

as regards of coloring, the use of browns, reds and roses complies with the theme you gave yourself, but this time I found you have managed to give a pleasant new depth to your artwork.

And all this elements provides a consistent and amazingly adult atmosphere while remaining of a poetry worthy to this lovely tale.

forgive my outburst and my English xD

Well, I'd never think to critique your work as I respect it too much for that. What I will say is that your work is highly distinctive and extremely imaginative. I really love this fresh take on the classic tale. Rather than simply rendering a scene, you've made the story more complex. The image causes questions in me that tell me that I never really knew the story, or the whole story, at all. Congratulations!

Btw, I hope you and your work are remaining dry in the UK. My best wishes.

Thank you very much, I truly appreciate it!
For the record I don't think that critiques are in any way disrespectful - they're an analysis of what works in a picture, and what doesn't (or could work better - there is always room for improvement!). The most helpful critiques usually come from people who genuinely like and respect your work, as they understand your artistic journey and are not clouted by misplaced feelings. Altough I do understand not wishing to critique an artist's work (I personally feel always bad pointing out imperfection, I feel like nitpicking...!).

Ahah and yes my artwork and I are quite windswept but otherwise dry, for now anyway!

Thank you for your kind response. If I had any advice for you it would be that you continue following your artistic instincts. From the evidence, they seem to be serving you well.
Wish I was going to be in Paris to see your show. Perhaps some other show sometime in the future.

KmyeChan In reply to GokiSoul [2014-02-11 11:08:38 +0000 UTC]

In the original story, no, not in the first place: she is held captive by the Beast as retribution for her father stealing a rose in his garden. But then she falls in love with the Beast and stays from her own will, protecting him from the villagers who want to take him down (Stockholm syndrome much? )
