Description Paint date: 2004-09-06.

Painted this from imagination (ie. image in my mind, without reference).
Somehow (and not surprisingly, heh), looks quite a bit like "someone" from the real world.
Same old question to DA - In this case, category: "Portrait", "People", or "Misc-"?

Anyway, it is now 2004-09-16 (Australian timezone), which means...
it's my 1st Year Anniversary on DA!
Have uploaded 300+ artwork (some were straight to Scraps section of course) over the year, and sincerely thank you for all your kind support

ps: since it's One Year Anniversary, I thought it's fun to look at the first deviation, submitted a year ago - [link] ... Hope I've improved a bit since then ;

Thanks again, reply soon!

Oh wow, I like this so much! The colors of the background and the face are amazing, and the hair is just very "wow"! All of the elements go together well and make a portrait that just intrigues me. I'd rather see this sort of painting in museums than others. xD

*Is all dizzy from being upside-down* If you look at it that way, it still looks like a man, but with this weird grey coat with a furry plack collar. Yeah, I'm pretty weird...but when I saw the thumbnail for this, I thought it was one of those pieces that is supposed to be seen two different ways. But the real subject's face doesn't really look like anything upside-down. Oh, well, I had fun, anyways. For some reason I really like his nose and the shadows under his eyes. Nice work.

Wow I hadn't thought of that, and it's an interesting concept..*starts to look at the picture upside-down*
I think it's because of the defined collar bones and the adam's apple + neck bone giving such effect...
Thanks for the comment and the interesting observation

Thanks again for the fav and comment

To answer your question -
why does the person have two lumps on his neck?

I was trying to draw a very thin person, you know some people are so thin that the bone of the neck also showing? That 2nd lump was suppose be the neck bone... guess I over-emphasized it

I love it. it's full of feeling, like all of your best work. and I know what you mean about having to re-learn realistic style after trying to draw in more 'anime' style
*huge hugs*

Thanks Eda
Heheheh.. I think I meant I had to "learn" to draw anime style... because I'm always used to more realistic style.. XD But right now it's good, back to the more realistic style fits me better... or anime-style "Koon" style and NOT the shoujo style XD <- can be egoistic XD; *mega hugs*

Your work always leave me speechless!!
I really don't know what to say(oi), so I'm going to FAV this.
What kind of "paint" did ou use? Other than watercolor and sumie?
True true, you don't really need to go to school to learn art.
...But recently,...I've been having a mixed feeling about it, because now I'm studying under a teacher who I really respect...and I feel like I can really learn a lot from him
And I love his style of drawing/painting!! He draws animals so good too,and in SKETCHY style XD (lol, now you see why I respect him so much).
Though the funniest thing is--that he DOESN'T teach a lot He actually lets you draw on your own, and sometimes leaves critical comments (lol) on your work.
Okay, sorry I rambled too much

Anyhow. Going back on the track--Your work gives me a powerful inspiration!!

koony In reply to nishikaze [2004-09-17 14:21:05 +0000 UTC]

Thank you thank you Yuko-san!
Actually, it's MAINLY watercolor, very dry water color... with white correction paint mixing up,, that's on the face part and you know this "gan-sai"? Yup, and that <- experimenting lol.

Oh oh. Re art school art lessons.. I was refering to "in general" cases I think, because most of the time you won't be able to pick your teacher if you just enroll into some courses/classes. So you're VERY LUCKY to have a teacher whom style you respect, PLUS, He actually lets you draw on your own, and sometimes leaves critical comments (lol) on your work. I think that's the best (and most crucial), because he doesn't say : "you SHOULD paint/draw it THIS way, THAT way.. NOT the way that you're drawing..." or.. "Your left foot is drawn longer than the right foot.." <- that kills you own art.

I do have artists styles which I respect (base on individual taste of course), so, in a sense we all "find out own" "art teachers" in this world and take inspiration, base on what we like. I love your art, so you're my teacher (by looking at your art), and then I get inspired by some elements and create it my own way... I love the "feeling" of Fujiwara-san art AND music, I take inspiration (because of my individual taste, having some resonance etc), and create it my own way to express my own feeling etc. Life is my art, music is my art etc... which, you don't get that in art school in general (ie.. how to draw things in a "proper" way, you tell me how to define "proper"? ).. unless, there are some lucky cases, like yours! that you encounter a teacher's style that coincides with what you like (ie.. draw animals, sketchy style... but not necessary liked by all the other students ^^) Plus having similar view - ie. let you be who you are, draw on your own.. that's awesome and so lucky! XD

Ah I love ramblings <- rambling right now XD
Thank you again!

nishikaze In reply to koony [2004-09-28 20:44:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I do think I'm lucky to be "taught" by such art teacher ^__^ I only hope he doesn't quit or transfer to another school before I graduate

I completely agree with you on your idea of finding a "teacher" in someone/something who inspires you!! And I'm happy to know that you think of me as a "teacher", because I THINK OF YOU as my teacher~!! Heh heh ^_^ Above all, I'm really happy to meet you, who inspires me a lot, and to know that you also find inspiration in my stuff. We can continue to grow...or "evolve" together.
...Ehh, I hope I'm making sense ^_^;

Oh, and I do get inspired a lot from music/songs too (especially Bump music!!). And I try to express my own feelings toward that certain music.

I believe too, that a person doesn't need to go to art school to be an "artist". I think artist is someone who is inspired by things around him/her, and convert his/her emotion or thoughts in his/her style. And then proudly declare it's part of him/her. Yeah.

Ahah...I'm getting tired from school work...and I guess you can see that from this message with these stupid hard-to-comprehend sentences? ^__^;
Anyways, thanks for reading!!

Congrats on the 1 year ^^ oh, the shading is so thick and deep... very different to usual sumi-e stuff. Is it still ink? Looks good though, with all the inky atmosphere, plus a kind of thick solid real feel to it. From imagination, a job well done :3

Thanks for the message, Trillzey
Well, just randomly doing experimentations lol. This time was sumi-e (chinese/japanese caligraphy ink) + watercolors (the real watercolors lol) + paint.. completely by improvisation and guess have been lucky so far, with the effect

Oh oh I meant to reply to your journal earlier but then the DSL "lost connection" again <- must change ISP >_<
YOU DON'T NEED TO HAVE BEEN TO AN ART SCHOOL TO DRAW/PAINT! Just draw according to your own pace
(look, I never took art classes/lessons, didn't draw for AT ALL for one whole decade.. until 2 years ago)
Plus, you are VERY talented and have a sense of depth (in drawing and character/essense of the drawing), sorry I can't express the words. Please don't be discouraged by art-block

Draith [2004-09-16 01:12:41 +0000 UTC]

If you meant it to be someone in particular, then it's a portrait. If not, then it's people. I like the realistic expression, and the way the eyes are looking off, and seeming to be focused on something out of the picture. It's not like a painting of someone staring at you, which can fall flat and feel a little unreal at times (though sometimes scarily realistic), but it's like looking at someone who doesn't know you are looking at them. Catching someone at the off-moment. Which I find interesting for a picture out of your imagination. To randomly paint someone who is looking off into the distance and off of the painting itself is intriguing. What are they looking at? FOR something? SOmeone? What are they searching for...
Technical-wise, I love the lights and shines you have in the hair, and the color/shading along the skin tones and the shirt. Great work as always, sorry to ramble as always

I really love this someone who looks like Fujikun here @_@ he looks SO REAL!!!!! What did you use this time?
And just a question since I've never really observed the male species..... they have 2 adam's apple? What do they do with the second one? keep it safe so that when they get hungry they can always eat it? (ok i'll stop now)

koony In reply to midnightpeppermint [2004-09-16 11:45:30 +0000 UTC]

Um.. I have no idea how many adam's apples.. but I clearly remember Fujikun is so skinny that he often appears to have TWO adam's apples on those photos/video clips... wait, that means I DID have Fujikun in mind while I as painting this eventhough it was "no one in particular" XD <-
Nonetheless, it's cool though, grasped people's attention and created a talking point... look how many DA friends made comments about the adam's apples? XD

As for what did I use to paint, it's chinese/japanese caligraphy ink + watercolors + paint. <- the trick is, mix all that in a "random", spontaneous, and improvisation sort of way. The SENNIN way kekeke!

Ah more replies later.

XDXD you can't get Fujikun out of your head XD so even if you want do draw no one in particular, you'd still draw Fujikun or someone who looks like Fujikun's evil twin.... ok slash the "evil" part out.

*looks at your comment page* Ok there's a lot of peopel who noticed the adam's apples too XD nice way to get a conversation starting ("Hey, I saw someone with 3 adam's apple!!! He's skinnier than Fujikun/the person who resembles Fujikun") XD

Oh the magic of the sennin way XDXD I thought it was only water color, those none-transparent ink things...

Um... I've gone up a level: I can't get Fujikun out of my head I even started looking like Fujikun XDXD <- wasn't planned! You have... ^^ But I'm also a fan of your old drawings. I've noticed that lately you've been drawing characters in a much more realistic style.. and I've got to say, you make some very amazing textures with paint. The shading is fantastic.

There's just one thing I don't get about this pic tho ;; It looks like he has two adam's apples.

koony In reply to gimmik [2004-09-17 11:56:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment
Well, as for drawing in a much more realistic way... it's actually coming back in a full circle. I used to draw in a realistic way more than a decade ago. Then stopped drawing for a decade due to science and engineering courses/work Only started to get back to drawing again in 2001 (thanks to Furuba, which, I don't follow anymore <- NOT a shoujo fan ).. of course, I have to sort of "learn" how to draw anime style since I was always drawing more realistic style .... then, stuff it.. I started drawing anime characs in a slightly realistic style.. and so on,.. the rest's history. Now back to realistic style lol, well, mixing.

As for the TWO adam's apples.. well, actually I did have fujiwara-san in mind half way painting, that guy is SO skinny that his adam's apple is very noticable.. plus the "bones" on his neck are also showing and they often make it appears that he has TWO adam's apples ... I guess I was emphasizing my impression, subconsciously <- rambles on lol.

As for the TWO adam's apple... well, I guess I did have Fujiwara-san in mind while painting half way, from all those photos/videos I've seen of him, his adam's apple is very noticable as he's a very VERY skinny guy.. I guess the 2nd adam's apple's the bone of neck showing.. <- very often, and it has the effect of looking like TWO adam's apple.. I tell you, that guy is SO skinny lol
