Description As the title says, a portret of my dog Sammy. I drew it for my brother because he wanted something to remember her by. She died in january.

I'm not to happy about it, and this is not the usual nitpicking. The highlights on her head looks different from the highlights on the rest of her fur. The highlights on her head took me ages and almost caused sleepless nights. The black part on her jaw looks to dark and weird, allthough it really is there on the ref pic. I like the other drawing I did of her better, see [link]

I might tweek some things about it. If I do, then I will update the newer version.

Coloured pencils on 30x42cm paper, about 10 hours.

Thank you. I spent quite some time on her to get everything right and still see things that should be different. But I always have that. She was a mixed breed and I dont know her parents so I have no idea what breeds she had in her.

yes, it's always like that with your own work, you see all the little mistakes that other have problems seeing. And it's really annoying, because I don't see those things until I'm finished, and then it's hopeless to change them:/

Okay, my dog is a mix too. Of four races actually.
Well, anyway your dog is beautiful So sad that she died..:/ I know how it feels, we had to put our old dog too sleep two years ago and I miss her still.

I know, I have the exact same problem with my drawings: always seeing mistakes when I cant change them anymore. So I have to live with them!
It is sad she died, but she was 14 and had a great live with us. I also still miss her though. I guess we will always remember them. And they deserve that!

Thank you. Its the only down side on owning pets: they always (well, almost always!) die first. But she left me with a lot of great memories! thanks for the comment!

Yes, thats true. She really was in a lot of pain so it was the best I guess. The point is, if she wasnt in so much pain, she still would have been such an energetic dog. I had a hard time dealing with that. But the memories are still great!

I see what you're saying about the lighting, but I would never really noticed it. hehe. You did a beautiful job on remembering this dog. Both pictures look great... besides, I think black is a hard color, and you pulled it off.

Thank you for the nice comment! I guess the lighting is just fine, I shouldnt look at a finished drawing for to long. I actually like to do black animals, maybe because Ive done quite few.

Wonderful work! I think the highlights look just fine, accentuating the short, sleek hair of the head and longer, thicker hair of the body which flows together. It's incredibly realistic and alive; I love the soft eye and scattering of white hair around the nose. Just wondering, do you color on smooth paper, or textured?

Thank you! I'm coming to terms with the highlights now because of comments like these. So sweet!
I color on smooth paper. There's a picture of it in my scraps. Its very nice paper with a hint of yellow/beige. It gives something special to the drawing, especially because I dont do backgrounds! To lazy to learn...

It looks really like paint this one. And the highlights on the head would be different, lighter cos they'd catch the most light and the fur is tighter and sleeker there too so more reflective. Good job, no more nitpicking !

well I say it's wonderful, and very well done... many of these little niggles do come from having spent so much time looking at a piece, in the end all you can see is the flaws. To me, all I see is a difference in hair texture - the head being short and sleek, and rougher hair on the body. And the light is coming from the very top left, shining directly onto her head - which would make the highlights on her head stronger as the body is in some kind of shadow, no? Those things seem to account for the differences, to me - and as others have said, it all meshes together.
anyway... I'm rambling now but this is a great piece of artwork, you'll have to take our word for it! lol

Well, then there is nothing I can do but believe you and be satisfied with the endproduct! I must say, your story does sound good, the way the light falls on her, why didnt I see that? You're to sweet!

Photographs don't give the whole liveliness of the animal, usually.. it can be hard to put it back in. I think that you did wonderfully on this; the layering of fur on the neck is superb, and I wish I could pull it off like you xx; The strength of the highlights on the face is a bit extensive, but, then again, I did a portrait of my friend's dog and my mind's eye definitely saw the way light hits fur in a different manner than what reality says I could be wrong, but if accuracy is what you strive for, you just have to follow what's there.

LindaColijn In reply to trilunar [2006-08-07 11:25:36 +0000 UTC]

I always try to make the drawing look as much as the picture as possible. But sometimes the drawing would turn out better if I let that perfectionism go. I should have done that here. I agree with the highlight on her head, might have looked better if it was darker.
Oh well, better luck next time! Thanks for the great comment!

Thank you. I'll try to be less critical. But you probably know how difficult that is! After looking at the drawing again, it seems it looks better in real life than on this photo.

lefty59 [2006-08-06 18:54:10 +0000 UTC]

I do that sometimes, especially with highlights...start out with one style on the head, then unwittingly switch when I get to the body. But to be honest with you, I see absolutely nothing off about this picture...at first, second, third, fourth, etc glance it still looks great! After reading your comment and scrutinizing the drawing, I can see what you mean about how it looks different, but it still looks like it all meshes together! Great job
