Description first real output from my new 3d fractal renderer

i've devised a neat depth of field approximation for xenodream style rendering, which i may write a little paper about... if i can find the time :/ seriously behind on my work but i took the day off yesterday anyway to code this up, and left it to render overnight on my laptop.

apologies for the large filesize, but that grain effect is really special there's a smaller, different/earlier version in my scraps.

Ever get a paper out of that DoF approximator?

nope, though i've extended it a lot and should someday opensource the code...

Great to see i'm not the only one who likes grain. It gives a sence of detail.

thanks

about releasing my renderer, it's taking a different direction these days, more along the lines of maxwell render: [link] so unfortunately i'm focusing less and less on fractals, for which i've always felt i have little talent compared to writing rendering systems. however, i do intend to keep helping *Aexion with his incendia project (as mentioned in his deviation), and actually he's pretty close to starting his beta testing for it. he's got the real fractal making talent, and hopefully with my technical help (which is unfortunately limited as it's his program) it will benefit enough to compete with xenodream etc.

of course i do, reading through oxymorons is a piece of cake in all seriousness, i think i know what you mean - it's something most fractal artists battle with (infinite detail, finite pixel realestate!).

glad you like it mate

I love it! It reminds me of moon ditches and Whac-A-Mole - that carnival game you know you'll still play to win a toy filled with sawdust. I actually forgot to tell you before that I made it my wallpaper, so I've been looking at this bitch a lot! Awesome and very tasteful work yo!

the renderer is brand new and right now renders only this fractal; i haven't added any kind of extensibility features maybe one day, right now i just make these programs for every image...

Kaeltyk In reply to lyc [2007-06-29 07:54:52 +0000 UTC]

Being a programmer myself, if you want of course, could I take a look at it ? That's 20 years now that I program and make 2D fractal art, and used to be a 3D artist too, and I love the render your program made. I'm used to tweak directly a program for a render

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lyc In reply to Kaeltyk [2007-06-29 17:51:38 +0000 UTC]

hmm, i'm going to have to decline, for two reasons the first is that this new renderer is a personal research project, and until i've published my methods (more info here: [link] ) i don't really want it out there for other people to claim as their own. who is other people? maybe these guys, who charge $120 for a really sub-par rendering engine and a basic 3d ifs implementation: [link] (i hope you understand!)

the second reason is that the program is really really unusable still: it's only rendering one (quite specialised) type of fractal so far, it's still 64bit only, and right now it doesn't even compile because a month or so i was busy making major changes (for rendering animations).

Kaeltyk In reply to lyc [2007-06-30 20:44:51 +0000 UTC]

I do understand very well, I'm a game programmer and I would not share a full personnal project (maybe the engine, not the game system), even more if it's research or something new (If I was able to imagine something 'new' ).

I read your link carefully, interesting even if was not able to complete my personnal raytrace renderer (looked at the algorithms & lighting, programmed them, made some cube/sphere render then went back to games ).

Good luck in developing this, I really hope I'll be able to see more of this soon or late !

it's actually not in greyscale! it's true i went overboard on the contrast (perhaps over-dramatising to make up for my currently boring life? who knows?) but there are some little hints of brown and plenty of blue innit? well, glad you like it

in any case, trifox has some 3d stuff in mutatorkammer - since you're his number one fractal producer i'm sure you could ask him for some stuff to play with

it's not? ah well get the coloured version up! j ust curious to know what your doing with your program, and what it's called!! and yeah i had read trifox has some 3d shenanigans going on with mutatorkammer, thats how i happened to visit his website while searching for 3d fractals
