Description The legendary F-4 Phantom II began as a proposal for the US Navy. Developed as an all weather fleet defense interceptor, they type was soon adapted to fighter and attack bomber roles due to it's incredible performance capabilities. It wasn't long before it was adopted by the US Marines and the Air Force for the air superiority role. A stellar performer, the F-4 Phantom II at one time held 16 world records for speed and climb. These were only eventually bested by it's F-15 Eagle replacement. Entering service in 1960, the F-4 Phantom II was used extensively in the Vietnam Conflict by all branches of the US Military. Our print depicts the F-4J model in the markings of the VF-84 "jolly Rogers" as they appeared during their cruise aboard the USS Independence in April 1968 - January 1969.

I think I've seen this print in Air Power, telling the story of an F-4 that shot down three Migs in one sortie. Β Nice pic.

I'm jogging my memory here...I think the pic I saw was a navalized F4 , but I think it was an oil, and was more from the back end of the plan. Β It's still an amazing similarity. Β The issue would have been around 1992 or 1993. Β Sorry, I can't remember the month.

Great work as usual. The F-4 Phantom was always one of my favorites. The Jolly Rogers famous skull & bones now resides with VFA-103 flying the F/A-18F Super Hornet. I have been lucky enough to have worked with the Jolly Rogers of VF-84 on th USS Roosevelt when they flew F-14 Tomcats. Now I get to work with the F/A-18 E, F & G models.

Can I fave this more than once? Wow! Awesome art, shows the aircraft in action at one of its best angles.
For me the F-4 Phantom was the greatest fighter of all time, from back in the days when I actually thought of signing up because I wanted to fly it. I later took flying lessons on my own in a tame civilian trainer and decided I would not have made the cut - but a guy can dream, right? I loved the look of the F-4 from most angles and I have the video of the Blue Angels when they used the F-4 in their shows (which if you watch on a large enough screen, in some of the scenes you should have your barf bag at the ready). And this one in Jolly Rogers colors too!

When it comes down to it I like almost all our US famous aircraft, but the F-4 is a favorite of favorites.

Great art Mr Mark!

As a child, I used to read a lot of aircraft books, and this plane recurred in most of the books. Perhaps, this was the greatest bomber of the vietnam wars. It don't have many guns, but strong shielding and generous of a-a missiles made it a formidable foe...
