beautiful strong colours especialy the purple in the sky. I've got such a simular view from near where I live in Canary Wharf, England...really inspired me to actually go shoot it

Atlanta, where I live, is land locked, so images like this are only when I travel.

Glad to provide some inspiration none the less!

Thanks.

I understand that. I don't often wait, in one SPOT for a picture, but I'll wait in the vicinity. I meandered about and took a lot of photos no one will ever see before heading back there for some dusk photos.

I hadn't been downtown in a decade and I don't remember a ton about the first trip, was with friends and that was more memorable than the city. But it is quite a beautifual and photogenic place.

Thanks!

I'm torn. I like the sky better in this one. I was racing to get down to the spot I took the other shot I posted but I'd lost some of the sky there. I'm probably more partial to the other one just from the suffering aspect of being sprawled out on cold concrete to take it. It was my last shot of the skyline before the sun totally went.

I've thought about taking some sunset shots again... it's been a long time... I also want to get some moon shots with the 400 though, to see what I can get with it. Think I've just missed the moon at it's best though.

I'm still looking at a better telephoto lens. I just haven't been able to bring myself to spend the $$. Every time I think about it, some big expense comes up. Maybe I shouldn't think anymore and just splurge.

syrus In reply to marksda1 [2007-05-07 10:30:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's probably the best way. I keep thinking to myself that if I just sold my L lenses I'd have no more debt... but that would mean selling the lenses which I couldn't possibly do now.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

marksda1 In reply to syrus [2007-05-07 14:45:17 +0000 UTC]

I could sell my house and be free and clear. And the though has crossed my mind, believe me. I would just have to figure out what to do with the stuff in my house... some of which I could toss and never care about, other belonged to family so I'd have to store it or something...

Anyway, not quite the same concept. I could still have my camera gear. Selling it would take a good nick out of my debt for sure, but it's not an option for me either.

marksda1 In reply to syrus [2007-05-09 17:08:21 +0000 UTC]

Tell me about it. I just ordered a new lens. I thought was going to get the 70-200 2.8, but I kept looking at the photos taken with it on Flickr and while they were great, I could tell right now I wouldn't be using the strengths of the lens. The more I thought about it, the thing I like most about my telephoto is the macro abilities but it's not a 1:1 lens nor is it super sharp. So, I got a prime macro, Canon 100 2.8 macro. Not L glass this time but everything I read about this lens said it was super. And supposedly can also function somewhat as mid range tele.

And because it costs next to nothing, I also got the 50mm 1.8 because I have a huge gap between focal lengths right now and this fits in the middle. There is an L glass for this focal length that's also 1.4 but I read mixed reviews on it and this one costs so little as to be practically considered disposable.

So, there, my passion continues to devour my finances.

syrus In reply to marksda1 [2007-05-10 10:42:24 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I was thinking of getting the 50 1.8 as a disposible type lens... I want the ... I forget what it is now... I think it's 28-105 L. f4 from memory. It covers the hole in my range perfectly. Don't like the look of it but I guess I need to go with function. And it still goes wide enough to be useful generally. Though I can't ever see myself leaving the 16-35 or 100-400 at home... just incase.

marksda1 In reply to syrus [2007-05-10 20:23:19 +0000 UTC]

The lenses came today. I haven't had time to properly test them and have dinner with a friend... maybe the weekend... I took a few shots of some flowers with the macro and even for a test fire was impressed. I used the same flowers for a 50mm test just to see the dof at 1.8... wow.... I think I comprehend why I've heard such good things about this cheap little lens.

I'm not bothered to necesssarily fill in every gap in the focal range. Hopefully most of the time I can walk te difference. Of course, at this rate, I'll eventually fill in anyway. I <3 my 17-40, so I know what you mean. A zoom telephoto is further off, but I'm good with that.

syrus In reply to marksda1 [2007-05-10 23:45:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... I guess you don't need the whole coverage, perhaps the 50mm would do me for now... I don't like the look of the 24/28-105 anyway... whereas the 16-35 and 100-400 look seeexy.

I want a macro but not enough to get one yet. It's the prime that gets me. I wont be getting anything soon anyway. Still have to sell my 300D and 28-80/55-200 first.

marksda1 In reply to syrus [2007-05-15 11:34:22 +0000 UTC]

I haven't played much with the 50mm yet but the bit I have I liked. Hope to get some use out of it on my trip. It really was so cheap it was trivial when combined with another lens purchase, tho.

The 100mm I've quite enjoyed. I played with it a lot over the weekend just getting a feel for it. The flower shots are still the only thing of any interest I've taken with it as far as posting goes. I haven't really worked with it, but it's supposed to have some utility as a telephoto as well. Since I'm not that thrilled with my zoom telephoto, I'm going to leave it behind in favor of the 100mm. I also got a tele extender dealio that I haven't really done more than snapped a few with, but will see how that works for me. I wish I had something to sell to pay for these. I might sell off the tele zoom I have, but I didn't pay a ton for it at the outset so not sure that it would be worth my time.

You can live quite happily with just one kidney

You're swaying me on the 50mm... I might have to get one when my tax money comes in. Or when I sell my 300. I still want a macro but it'll have to wait...

And yeah, compared to buying 2 L series at once, just after getting the 30D body, the 50mm is peanuts haha

marksda1 In reply to syrus [2007-05-16 16:55:02 +0000 UTC]

I haven't played with the 50mm as much as I should but I've had no time to get out since I got it. But I read constant praise for it. The only bad thing I ever heard was build quality, i.e. plastic, breaks easily. But for $80 expecting a solid body is a bit much. Oddly enough, I read a few bad reviews for the L version of this lens. Don't know what's up with that.

I think I would have hyperventilated after that purchase. I looked at some 5D's last night, got over the interest fast! Although better than when I got my 20D. I talked to my insurance agent this week and I think I'm about to insure the lot of my camera gear. My homeowners covered it for theft and such, even when traveling, but with the deductible for my homeowner's policy and of course that doesn't cover just really horrible bad luck. Price looks to be about $80 a year (not professional insurance, so good as long as a hobby). Anyway, the point of that was, it was the first time I wrote everything down along with purchase price to give to my insurance agent and.. eek...

syrus In reply to marksda1 [2007-05-17 01:41:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I need to get mine insured. I've got a paid shoot coming up when I sort it out, which will be good. Yeah I've heard bad things about the similar 50mm lenses that cost more. Like the 1.4 not being worth the money, and so on. Saw one that went as wide as f1 but I forget what the focal length was... my only other option would be to get several lenses on a pay monthly scheme like I originally wanted to... or get another card and just chuck them on there and close my eyes tight. Not sure yet, need to get a few months out of the way first.

Wow, money off photography - who'da thunk!

I've sold a couple of prints, but I'm nowhere NEAR in the black on this! Glad I enjoy it!

I'm sure eventually I'll get the zoom tele I want. I wouldn't be surprised if it's this year. But that's pretty much it for lens right now. I'd kind of like the 5D, but really not enough to pay for one right now. That's probably off until an incredible deal comes along... riiiightttt...

I do my best not to charge things. I do have charge cards but I usually pay them off at month's end. I use them more for convenience than finance. That said, with the new lens, some brake work (important stuff that being able to stop) and some splurging this month, I'll be carrying a balance or a month or two... never say never...

I live to my limits. If I've got it it finds a way of slipping out of my hands and into other peoples pockets. This last month/couple have been pretty bank breaking for me. Bloody car.

I haven't checked if I've sold any prints... I haven't been putting new stuff up as prints either, can't be bothered anymore. This place is saturated.

The only reason I'd like the 5D is because it's full frame, and that has both positive and negative aspects. I love my 30D though... wouldn't want to change it unless there were more pro's.

Lenses first... after staying alive.
