When travelling across the deep void, life begins to adapt to the journey. Depending on the vessel and circumstance, the transformation might take just a few nights, or reach far deeper for months at a time. The rhythm of the hourglass, the sound of the bell and sirens, the creaks and rumbles of a ship come to define the day. Confined to a few compartments, life can grow oppressively small and fragile. Even on the largest vessel, the pressurized rooms are outmatched a hundredfold by inaccessible machinery. And even the most powerful machine is lost in the vast cosmos in an instant. Life among the stars challenges one’s perspective. It is thought, by most, to be a humbling experience. Though everybody copes with such displays of one’s insignificance in different ways. Reckless heroes and brooding philosophers, prophetic poets and blessed fools are born out of this experience.

Some say, all starfarers are eventually driven mad. Mad with too much life, too much space, too much time that they have seen pass by. Whether that is true or not, one might well debate. But nobody denies that there are certain eccentiricites which all void-ward folk are prone to display.
