Description
Starships are naturally the pride and joy of all void-faring kin, crossing the space between stars and their worlds. They are often regarded as the highest achievement of humankind, works of art and technology fit to bend the rules of the universe, even transgress against them to enable journeys of countless generations within a single lifetime. Without them, interstellar civilization could not exist in the way that it is known, and the Known Worlds would be set adrift, scattered, and estranged.
And yet, for all their wonder, starfaring vessels are a mere fraction of all works of technological wonder that form the foundation of the imperium. For every starfaring vessel there are untold thousands of sub-light craft, orbital lifters and cutters, interplanetary bulks and barges, stations and satellites. Vast offworld infrastructure, from habitats to maintenance drones, form the core of settlement and industry. Though they lack the glamor of grand interstellar journeys, they are arguably more instrumental to most worlds in matters of conflict and trade.
Should starfaring vessels disappear, the Imperium at large would be at peril, perhaps disintegrating entirely as systems are thousands of years apart. Yet very few worlds would suffer catastrophically. The survival of worlds within a system is assured, as they have virtually infinite resources and energies at their disposal.
Should, on the other hand, all offworld assets but the starships vanish, there would be nothing left of most settled worlds. Without that infrastructure, they would shrivel and die, cut-off from one another on just the interplanetary scale.
