Description
The Von Der Tann-class heavy armored cruiser is the most common de-facto capital vessel in service of the Germania Federation and an important component of most medium to heavy Pan-European Allied Astro Forces.
Characteristics
At 946 meters, the Von Der Tann is one of the largest vessels of the German "Kommando Weltraum" and a recent addition to the joint astro forces. Rather than a linear progression of previous generations, the hull was designed in a combined project with french and danish starshipbuilding companies and features an atypical skeletal- and bulkhead structure compared to older German designs.
Much of the Von Der Tann's arsenal is made up of well-proven systems that have been in service for a considerable amount of time. This standard arsenal is augmented by a number of specialized superheavy launch- and weapons systems, including the Säbelzahn Superschwere Raumhaubitze and modified extra large vertical launch systems. Both allow the Von Der Tann to carry long range weaponry typically reserved for stationary installations.
History
With the development of the Von Der Tann, the Germania Federation deviated from its traditional shipbuilding paradigm in both the design of the vessel and its role as part of the Astro Forces.
On its own, the Von Der Tann is larger and more capable than almost every other ship operated by Germany and the Allied Powers of Pan-Europa at large. It also foregoes the usual high specialization and instead carries a multi-purpose arsenal of superheavy weapons that would not find room on the fleet's usual smaller ships.
This shift in the design goes along with a whole new set-up of battle groups and task forces centered around Von Der Tann class vessels. Rather than dynamic task forces of different specialized vessels complementing each other, the Von Der Tann is designed to be the dominant core of any group it partakes in, being modified by lesser vessels according to mission requirements.
It was also designed with international task forces in mind, forming the backbone of fleets at a scale no nations could single-handidly manage.
In these two shifts from tradition, the Von Der Tann is said to reflect the changing focus of the Allied Powers of Pan-Europa as a whole, setting sights on bold expansion rather than mere territorial defense.
