Description So, over the last couple of days I've been wanting to start a new car model - I guess I was inspired by ~ParagonOfVirtue 's Ferrari 458 Italia model (go check it out, it's awesome [link] ) - so instead of reworking the Golf GTI, I decided to work on a new project and try to avoid the mistakes I made on the Golf. Also going to try and get a better render out of this, so here's hoping it'll work out

Anyway, I've gone for the 2012 Audi A5 Coupé and as you can see I'm using some blueprints. I found these on SMCars.net in the Audi section ([link] ) and after some cropping in GIMP brought them into Blender 2.62 and lined 'em up - it's much, much easier than trying to line up reference photographs, I was done in roughly ten minutes.

So, I'm currently just outlining the important topological features of the front wing panel, but I'm hoping to get a general shape for most of the side panels done tonight.

I......... can't believe I did't see this ...
Oh well, actually I can believe it, I've been purposefully avoiding going into my inbox 'cause, for some reason, it get's crowded overnight & it takes me hours to look through it all & then I don't get enough time for Blender maybe I should take a couple of groups out of my devwatch ...

Anyway those are nice blueprints I don't know if you've had it but I've been getting this amazing feeling with the Italia when each panel matches the blueprint from all perspectives, It's like it was "printing" itself out in 3D it's hard to describe ...

& there is one thing I'd like to say about this...
I couldn't help but notice how your workflow is so not like mine ...
That's actually how all the tutorials I've seen tell me to do it but... my right brain... my "gizzard"... keeps choosing to ignore it ... maybe I'm just weird

haha, I get that too, sometimes my Watch notifications go over 300, but...I generally just skim through them until something catches my attention

Yeah, I've been getting a bit of that with the blueprints - it's much, much easier than trying to model from reference photographs, what with the absence of perspective distortion and whatnot. However, I find the lack of shading to be quite confusing at times - I kinda have to "strain" my brain a bit more to figure out what's a body-panel separation and what's a "crease" line along a door
Of course, the blueprints also don't match up 100%, but it's not that much of a problem, I just have to choose the "dominant" blueprint for that particular piece.

About my workflow...I actually made a rather embarrassing mistake with this - I modeled that whole panel flat, then had to re-position all the vertices by hand so that they would match the front and top views Was a pain to do, but...at least now I've got it fixed, and I've finished most of the front-left section I'll post another WIP tonight if I can

Honestly, one of the things that extended my sabbatical year so long was the thought of going into my inbox ...
& sure enough I was over 10000 watch notifications ...
So I had to make a painful but necessary rule: if my inbox ever gets crowded like that again, I'll just delete them all & start over ...
& I even took some of the largest groups out of my watch, reminding myself why I avoid large groups...

Well back to the task at hand, usually a simple photo will clear all your doubts about lines in a blueprint Thought there's also the rare, but worse case when it'l only create more confusion Alas my current predicament...

But then once again... your workflow is so not like mine ...

Okay, you're definitely going to have to post some more WIPs...even if it's just so I can compare our workflows

Anyway, I was wondering...are you planning on returning to BlenderArtists?

You know... I've been seriously, seriously, thinking of going back. But then when I open the page everything is SO changed, I'm having trouble to even find the "Login" button ...
I guess I'll just have to get used to it cause I could really use the feedback of a few Blender Gurus ...
Specially now since I'm still massively stuck in the rear panel...

Lol, it's not that different - in fact, the overall functionality is waaay better now By Blender Gurus, do you by any chance mean TyrantMonkey?

The Login boxes are on the top-right, btw

Hmmmmm... well if TyrantMonkey can help me with my new Nemesis then ...

Anyway, I think I'll go in tomorrow 'cause If I go now I won't be able to sleep tonight ...

& then..

My guess is your new Nemesis will tremble at the mere mention of TyrantMonkey's name

I hope 'cause quite frankly, right now, I'm outmatched

...you think you could post another WIP? Kinda curious to see this monster of a Nemesis

ParagonOfVirtue In reply to MeshWeaver [2012-04-06 05:31:47 +0000 UTC]

Well, there's the problem... It's not exactly a topological Nemesis (yet)...
I've actually been avoiding it in favor of the glass panels & other smaller details...

You see, I think I've finally found 2 reference photos that sort of "match up" in the rear, but that shape only very very loosely resembles the blueprint & the shape itself is simply monstrous ...
I've no idea where to start ...

That & a certain web page has been distracting me...

...not TVTropes again?

Hmm...I've got a few spots like that on the Audi, it's pretty annoying... I have to sift through several photos and find what matches up and even then I'm not sure - I think I accidentally ended up with some 2011s mixed in with the 2012s
I'd say, start with what "feels" right, and figure it out as you go - usually works for me It's a pain oftentimes, but modeling a "stand-in" might spark some inspiration, you know?

You know, we need a "Make awesome car model" button in Blender, kinda like the legendary "Make Awesome Render" button...
Brecht, make it so!

Oh no... worse... Fanfiction.net ...

Hmmm... use the gizzard, huh? ...
I think I can do that see how it turns out ...
