Description After working off-and-on for over a year, I've finally finished my NES model! This was created using only open-source software (Blender 2.5 series and GIMP) and is the single most complex project I've ever undertaken.

A few statistics :
- Number of vertices at final calculation (for rendering) : just over 1.5 MILLION.
- More than half the textures used were created from scratch.
- Started in June 2010 to celebrate the announcement of "The Legend of Zelda - Skyward Sword".
- A real NES was used for direct measurements. This is my most physically-accurate model yet.
- Oh, and this is entirely, 100% Blender Internal Render Engine. No external engines whatsoever.

The NES console is of course the property of Nintendo - this is a tribute by a fan to what is probably the greatest gaming console ever created

...my mind is actually having trouble adjusting to the fact that I really am done

Hi, do you have this model still?Β

There is a mod called Gmod Tower which is a gamemode for Garry's Mod and they are looking for a better model to use for their in-game NES emulator. This is an amazing model and they would love you forever if you let them use it.

Hi there!

I do indeed still have this model. Β Thanks for letting me know about the Garry's Mod game-mode and the Gmod Tower console model issue, I'll definitely check it out!

The emulator itself is still being developed, but I know from their trello that they are looking for a better model to use, and this one is so great that I had to say something.
Here's the status on that project:Β trello.com/c/9RZGTPgN/502-nes-…
It'd be awesome to see this model included as the final model

Ah, thanks for the link! I'll try and contact the two developers and see if an arrangement could be worked out

I may also have to try Garry's Mod now, it looks quite interesting!

Oh, with the amount of vertices this has, it'd probably be impossible to use in the game, unless they can modify it somehow to lower the count... hm.

...I feel so old looking at one of these with such nostalgia. Being a 90s kid and all, I call tears of joy looking at one of these. TwT

Anyways, great modeling dude; simply fantastic work from my eyes!

Thanks a lot! I pretty much grew up with one of these as well - that and DOS games like Crystal Caves and Commander Keen - but I sadly no longer have my original...have a "new" one though, works great

...if only I had that Zelda cartridge though... I've only got Super Mario Bros and Rygar...I MUST HAZ MOAR

Very good Blender internal render setup and lightning. Did you use approximated or raytraced ambient occlusion, or didn't you use AO?^^

And a good choice of the game!

MeshWeaver In reply to o0Hellton0o [2011-10-13 14:02:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot!

I just rechecked my *.blend, and I used Raytraced AO at 0.5 (Add) and Environment Lighting at 0.33, with only three lamps (an Area behind the camera, with two Points on either side as Fillers with warm/cool colours, Specular turned off for Points). Funny thing is that I really didn't fight with the lighting for too long, found the right setup almost immediately...was lucky, I guess

o0Hellton0o In reply to MeshWeaver [2011-10-13 15:06:13 +0000 UTC]

uuuuhhhhhh "Raytraced AO at 0.5 (Add)" exact what I use most times
The only thing what what I miss on Raytraced AO, is indirect lightning.

I don't use arealights very often, but it looks very good I should try to more use them. Thanks for the information

MeshWeaver In reply to o0Hellton0o [2011-10-14 01:46:20 +0000 UTC]

no problem! haha, it's actually the opposite with me, I need to cut back on Area lamps, I use them too often and it slows down my renders

wow, thanks BJ! ...can I call you BJ for short, btw?

hey, it's never too late to start! I've been learning how to do this stuff basically on my own, using online tutorials and so on Blender has the advantage of being open-source so it doesn't cost a cent, and places like BlenderCookie.com have some really excellent (and free) tutorials on everything from modelling to effects to animation and so on... um...I'm babbling, aren't I? hahaha

id say he'd be happy that the legacy of such an old and simple console has gone on this long#
it was amazing then, and its still is today.
the only real way to play games that challenge you is to go retro, games today are of a different breed.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MeshWeaver In reply to BlurredLogic [2011-08-14 16:42:01 +0000 UTC]

well, it's the console that almost single-handedly revived the video game industry and introduced some of the most well-known series in gaming history, so I guess it has to have had some effect on us hahaha, but yeah, I'm surprised as well, 'cause I always get the impression that most modern "hard-core" gamers dismiss Nintendo as being only for kids 3-4 years old... it's good to know the classics are still classics

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BlurredLogic In reply to MeshWeaver [2011-08-16 19:39:33 +0000 UTC]

ya i hate that,Nintendo kickass, but there always dismissed as being for kids

hopefully the WIIu and 3ds will change this..what with Resi and streetfighter being launch titles

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MeshWeaver In reply to BlurredLogic [2011-08-17 05:18:18 +0000 UTC]

hopefully... never played Resident Evil or Streetfighter though, haha what I'm really looking forward to, though, is a TP-style Zelda in 1080p HD, like that demo they had at E3 - I bought a used PS3 last month and have been experiencing how awesome 1080p is don't get me wrong though, the Wii is awesome in the graphics department (just look at Sonic Colours and Super Mario Galaxy 1&2)

...on a side note, Unleashed looks way nicer on PS3 than on Wii, and the Werehog is also way better...though I think I prefer the Wii day-stages, less blindingly-fast, haha

BlurredLogic In reply to MeshWeaver [2011-08-19 18:08:07 +0000 UTC]

you got a ps3 awesome, if you want a game that pushes the boundry of the machine to the limit, check out uncharted. uncharted 1 was kickass, but it only used 10% of the machine's power. Uncharted 2 blew my mind, the stuff they managed to do was amazing. The detail is ground breaking.. its...just amazing.

WiiU Loz looks really good, there a huge upgrade since TP,but in all fairness, that was a gamecube port

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MeshWeaver In reply to BlurredLogic [2011-08-20 04:55:17 +0000 UTC]

haha, yeah, TP wasn't the best example of the Wii's power I'd love to play it on GCN though - the sun would rise in the east like it's supposed to

Uncharted? it was actually included when I bought the PS3 on eBay - I haven't tried it yet, though I get the impression a lot of people recommend it
