denis hooked me up with a link to this portrait as well... i really like it, great work. I only have one of redman's albums (his first solo album I think), but I really like what I've heard of him. the portrait shows a lot of personality.

sent me a note with nothin but a link in it, the link was to this picture.
He knew I would be knocked out by it, and I am.
I didnt know he had died. That's very sad, but wonderful that he was still playing live so close to his departure. I was lucky enough to see Elvin Jones not long before his death. That sounds weird, you know what I mean though, he was still playing right up to near the end.
This looks like a studio shot, it is so perfect, but at the same time has an enormous energy to it that would be hard to find in a studio, I would think.
The choice of black and white, the lighting, the pose and the framing all work perfectly to not only pay a fitting tribute to a very special musician, but also somehow seem to reflect the fact that he was near the end of his time on this plane.
Absolutely awe-inspiring work!

I think the link between music and imagery is very strong, well certainly for me too, and denis as well.....funnily enough your pic of Dewey came up in my random favourites just minutes ago, so I was able to contemplate it again. Made me want to paint it, but I have other projects on the go, so wont even ask at the moment...it's so tempting though, esp. being monochrome, as I love the freedom that comes with that!

This is a fine example of photography at its best. You captured the mood, expression and talent of an artist doing what he loves best in a perfectly framed composition.
Brilliant work.
