Do you have a particular way of going about drawing from reference? Because these are really impressive and it's something I struggle with myself. Amazing stuff.

did you apply a sharpness filter to 1, 2, and 4 or is that just the brushes?

Mr--Jack In reply to 543Bs0Za [2014-02-27 00:02:40 +0000 UTC]
There's the same unsharp applied to all 4, which I do when I downsize for web.

Personal opinion: capturing the atmosphere and weather of a landscape photograph is impressive. I for one am pretty terrible at landscapes and observational drawing, and I need a lot of practice. I simply could not get these results (especially with the ease and in the time that Luke does) without a lot of hard work. Possibly you can do it with ease. Not everyone can.
As an additional note though, I don't think these paintings were meant to be fascinating original art pieces. They are studies. For practice.

Well, I'll tell you what I love and admire in Mancini's art - it feels very relaxed and the brushstrokes look like they were laid down with no effort at all.
But at the same time I know there is huge amount of work, blood, sweat and passion that is under cover.
It is something that your pictures don't have...yet.
I wish to you, that someday you would become as pro as Luke did.
And I would speak words of reason to someone in the comments below your beautiful work.Β
Peace!Β Β

I glanced at your gallery and I can tell your eye for art is not at a level where you can judge the work of those better than you. It's clear that we're seeing very different things in this guy's paintings but that's most probably because you don't have a good understanding for art, you know? There's two ways to go about art; the fun approach, and the fundamental approach. I see you've went with the former, and that's just fine, but if you don't know what you're talking about then don't say anything at all.

Wow. Β I recommend you adjust this superiority complex you are nursing if you ever plan to go professional. Β You won't go far, thinking like this. Β It's both rude and profoundly uneducated to assume that you have a better eye for understanding art and therefore all other opinions on art are invalid. Β This is a fundamentally opposed notion to the core of the journey an artist makes. Β Even more so for a professional concept artist, as you are designing for the consumption and enjoyment of non-artists. Β Essentially, you need to grow up, and heed the advice of your own final sentence here. Β No one likes a bully. Β An art snob bully even less.

While it is true that I don't develop my painting skill much since it's only a small hobbie for me, I find your philosophy laughable.
All I clearly see in this situation is that you have a double-standard problem.
You judge a way more pro artist and then tell me that you can magically get into my head and know what my eyes are capable of.
That is just being hypocritical and all-around prude.
And that is just not good for your karma.

Just because photo reference was used doesn't mean it's not impressive. Not many people can eyeball the colors and lines of an environment and accurately capture or even enhance the feeling of the ref.Β

ehecod In reply to CaraidArt [2014-02-24 22:20:19 +0000 UTC]
That's your opinion. I know it's not easy to eyeball colors, but just because something's hard to do, it doesn't make it impressive.
