Description Another view of the self-portrait foliate mask. This IS a work in progress.
I'm posting this other view because my first posting of this piece dropped out of the sculpture gallery for some reason. I looked, and it's just not there. Hopefully this one will show up.

Those of you who have already commented on View 1, thanks! I didn't want to resubmit the deviation and wipe you all out. Don't feel like you have to comment on this view too, but feel free if you want to!

Unfired clay, 18".

Thanks very much. Anasazi or Death Valley--I forget which. It's a cone 10 clay, but we rarely fire it that high.

goodness me! what detail!! and what a wonderfully expressive face. it really does seem alive.

beautiful work. i can't even begin to imagine the patience you must have to sculpt all those little leaves.

Funny--that's what Intro-Extro says... He suggested jokingly that I use cookie cutters to make the leaves, and I suggested he should use barbie dolls as models for his figurative work, so we're even...

The piece is a self-portrait of me, actually--I was going for a kind of mischievous look...

this is utterly amazing! I've always wanted to try my hand at this type of art, but with this arthritis now I don't think I ever will.

Very beautiful work!

MsJ777 In reply to uberbechin [2004-08-29 03:33:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Sorry about the arthritis.

It's funny--I've gotten twice the amount of comments on view two, but I really think that the first one is the better image--angle, lighting, etc. I DO know that's mostly due to DA eating the first one--it never showed up in the gallery. The people watching me got notified, but that's it...

amazing detail.
back to on the same wavelength, in beginning ceramics in college i did a self-portrait as yakshi (the hindu minor goddessed depicted entwined with trees on temple gates).

MsJ777 In reply to manycircles [2004-08-22 01:51:42 +0000 UTC]

My very first piece in clay was a foliate mask, so I decided to do one a year to gauge my progress. I'm about 2 years overdue for one, and really identify with the Himalayan blackberry plant, so this was the logical next step...

I'd like to see your yakshi portrait!

a great peice~ I really enjoy the detail and the craftmanship. the natural color of the clay grounds the whole figure, which is my favorate part. good job.

Thanks! How weird--I didn't get notified I had this comment--had to find it under the piece. I agree--I really love the color of the natural clay. Sometimes the color's actually a disappointment after firing...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ollaysheo In reply to MsJ777 [2004-08-21 22:20:43 +0000 UTC]

yes, indeed the color can change. Then, i say, use a glaze as right as rain to bring the shape alive. powder from the earth, turns to glass!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MsJ777 In reply to Ollaysheo [2004-08-21 22:26:45 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately, most glazes obscure a good portion of the intricate detail I put into these, so I usually color them with watercolor underglazes and then do a light coat of matte/satin clear glaze over the top. Thanks for the devwatch!

MsJ777 In reply to BittersweetLuna [2004-08-21 04:56:25 +0000 UTC]

Due to THOUSANDS of undercuts--There can BE only ONE! If I were production minded, I could make this with few undercuts, do a mold of it, and crank 'em out by the hundreds. But that would be BORING....

No, soory, I ain't sloggin' my ass (wheat-free, of course) across the country to be yer damn wall hanging. Reminds me of that "No one Knows" video, for some reason...
