Nope. The piece was delivered to the person who commissioned it as-is. She likes to finish things her way.

Thanks very much! Uadjet is a Goddess that predates Isis, actually--but she is definitely of Egyptian origin--glad that came through!

*astonishing*

Powerful, unobjectified female studies are tough to find in *any* genre....I can *see* through the filter of the photograph This is highly imaginiative & well executed technicall, as well.

she's beautiful! I love the scales! I'd be interested in learning more about the technique you used to make the scales.

MsJ777 In reply to Sya [2005-08-30 18:14:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Pretty much as I described it, really--I took a nailhead and ground it to the approximate shape of a cobra scale, then pounded the head to cup it slightly. I studied the scale pattern of actual cobras, then started impressing the head on a slight angle (bent the nail to make it easier to grip) from the back of the piece to the front, staggering and "overlapping" the scales and leaving essentially half an impression from the nail to give a natural appearance. I hope that explains it...

I got a little either lazier or smarter (depending on your POV ) on my "Omphalos" piece--I took the plastic mesh bag that comes around mini cheeses and impressed it in places to give a scale effect. Since the look I was going for was one of an ancient relic, I didn't want it to be uniform or to "stick out" much, but to look worn down and/or eroded in places instead. I think the effect was successful--and SOOOOO much easier!

Sya In reply to MsJ777 [2005-09-06 18:42:00 +0000 UTC]

ah yes, great idea you had!! (sorry it took so long to get back to you about it) I will have to try something similar next time... this one by one thing is killing me. The advantage is that I have control over making larger and smaller scales, and the overlapping of the scales is plumping my dragon out quite nicely in the arms and legs, giving her the appearance of being more muscular.

My husband has requested a mean black dragon next... which will be quite a juxtaposition to the kind sweet nature of my present dragon. Should be fun though!

Thanks very much! Actually, this is the last anyone will likely see of it here. It was finally delivered to the person who commissioned it--she decided she wanted to finish it herself. I will very likely make another someday though...

only-zuul In reply to MsJ777 [2005-08-06 06:05:15 +0000 UTC]

Wow, isn't that a bit odd? It's like "hi, make this for me, no wait, I want to make it myself??"

Hmmmm. I would really have a hard time letting something go like that. Of course, if I were getting PAID, then probably it would be so serious. I know that when I design (websites, print, etc), I get to a place in my head where I do good design, but it's also ultimately what the client wants, and if they want something that's just not pretty, I can only advise them against it, and then it's their choice. I sort of divest myself of the "my baby" aspect to my creativity. Does that make sense? Do you have to do that in cases like this? I wouldn't think it's a common issue, the whole, "finish it myself" thing...

??

MsJ777 In reply to only-zuul [2005-08-06 06:44:30 +0000 UTC]

This person is very special to me, and waited a LOOOOOONG time for me to finish it myself. I never could, because I didn't want to let her down and never found the kind of colors in glazes that she was looking for. So I gave her the option of finishing it herself (she paints statuary), and she took it.

Not a common thing for me, usually--but then again right now I don't do many commissions...

Ah, it was being painted!! I kind of envisioned it as just plain, no paint, like a sculpture. I never thought of it being painted!!

Now I really want to know what it turned out like!

Thanks--it's the filter. I wanted to accentuate the scales and make the setting look temple-like. Although it sacrificed a bit of clarity, I think it enhanced the mood.

She's amazing.....I'm doing research for a future fiction piece (actually I started it - Dirty Hands in my gallery) based on the Minoan civilization on Crete. They worshipped a serpent goddess....unfortunately, not much is known about them so I am basing a lot of my story on their art. My family on my dad's side is from Crete so I also have a bloodline to follow!

MsJ777 In reply to MDragonfly [2005-01-02 16:53:03 +0000 UTC]

I am utterly obsessed with that culture--I have a reproduction of that Serpent Goddess in my bedroom. One of the first ceramic pieces I did was based on her and a male figure from one of the frescoes in the complex. Unfortunately, it showcased my complete lack of anatomical knowledge at the time, and will NOT be shown here.

An excellent book with an alternative (and I believe, far closer to correct) idea about the "palace" at Knossos is "Knossos Labyrinth: A New View of the 'Palace of Minos' at Knossos", by Rodney Castleden. You can read the first few pages here:

Before you go any further, it would be worth your while to check the book out from the library or purchase it--fascinating!

Crete is tops on my list of places I want to visit someday.....

Thanks for the resources! I've done some but it was for a dance class a couple years ago. I borrowed a book from one of my dad's friends who just went not too long ago. It's more on the palace structure but there are some images of the art in them.

I thought some of your pieces had that "feel" to them!! I'm a spiral freak anyway but all the nature subjects appeal to me as well.

I've been to Crete twice...LOVED it both times. The minute I stepped off the plane, I felt like I had been there before! Of course I was a teenager so I didn't know much about the palace or anything. I told my dad that we will have to go back (I want my husband and kids to see Greece, too) so I can do research for my book! *Runs off to search for writing off research trips as business expenses

Yes, you can write it off... Oh envy! I'd love to go--just LOOKING at pictures from there makes me think I've been there before. I'm fascinated by many ancient cultures, but Crete has always been "it" for me.

What kind of dance class? NOW you've piqued my interest (MORE, actually! )

MDragonfly In reply to MsJ777 [2005-01-02 17:18:59 +0000 UTC]

It was a cultural class, and intro that was less abotu movement and more about history and the use of dance throughout the world. I am actually going to be graduating this spring with a combined Dance Education degree...though I'm not going to be teaching dance necessarily...(I work in an autistic school - I was halfway through the dance degree in 91 when I dropped out to get married and have kids - went back in 96 to finish...but slowly!!) I'm sure I will use dance with my student's but not exclusively.

Did you read my Dirty Hands deviation? I'd be curious to know what you thought.
