Is Artrage your first digital program for painting? Have you tried others? I am interested, possibly, in vector programs that will allow me to print my images very large. PhotoShop and other pixel based programs will not do this well. But, I am so very reluctant to learn a new program.

I've been using GIMP mainly, which is a good program that can do a lot of the things photoshop can do.
I'm no expert on digital art software, so I don't know whether you'd be better off with ArtRage or GIMP as opposed to what you're using now (which I assume is photoshop). ArtRage gives you brushes that carry paint in some ways that are similar to real paint... You can load the brush heavily or add thinners. It includes a palette knife and various textures of paper and canvas. I did this picture with the free trial version, but the full program is so cheap at $25, it's kind of silly not to buy it. I'll be purchasing it shortly.
One thing I do know about ArtRage is that if you use layers, the finished piece has to be saved as a photoshop file or the layers will be flattened. However with both GIMP and ArtRage you can adjust the dpi for printing resolution. Whether they do this any better than photoshop for the purpose you have in mind, I just don't know.

I have learned a lot from them! And I learned a lot from my own printing mistakes ... dpi is *everything*.

Me too! I know the dpi should match the printer's capability as well as the finished size, if that helps. If you're getting these printed by a pro, then they might also have some helpful tips.
