Beautiful. To me, blue is such a calming color. It definitely applies for this picture.

Thank you! I use Blue and serenity/calm in general a lot in my art. I think I paint, draw, etc. mostly to find peace.

Hey! I haven't talked to you in a while!
AUGH! You've gotten a billion comments on this piece already!!
But I saw it and I had to comment!
The shading on this piece is absolutely gorgeous! And the subject matter is beautiful. I love the colour scheme too, it adds to the calm feel of the piece! I feel relaxed just looking at it!
My only teeny suggestion would be to see if you can blend the fingers a little more because they're kinda sharp and pixelated, but that's a really small thing compared to how much I enjoy this picture

Thanks!
This was my 3rd serious attempt at digital art. I used the joystick of my laptop (internal mouse) and drew it directly into the program (as I don't have a scanner.) Some day I'll fix it up or maybe do a painted version of it. Blues are sort of my signature colour. I work with them often because of the serenity.

I see a lot of comments about how well the blue-green-indigo tones work here, and I agree. It gives this a richness-in-shadow that standard blacks and grays would lack. And the toning and shading around the mother's face provides her with something of an Everywoman quality.
I did notice that her hands and forearms seem rather longer and thinner than I'd expect, though. Is that just me, is it part of your GIMP learning curve, or is it a deliberate foreshortening effect?

Thank you!!!
I have slim arms and legs, so she get that from me. But her face is based on a Filippino woman who was special to me. A math teacher. (I didn't use any refs for this, of course.)

Wow! Thank you! Some digital art seems to lack feeling to me. It can be too glossy and perfect. I was really trying to make this picture expressive. Blue is a colour of often return to, I think for it's calling to mind water and sky.

Thank you! I'm really pleased that it touched you and got you thinking.
Your comments made a lot of sense. The humanist gaia often appears in my writing and art. I set out to show the love bond that holds humanity together -- our good, gentle compassionate side. But in presenting the good side, our dark side is implied.

beautifull, but the sahdings in the face are in my eyes a bit to strong on one half
oh and the blue give that a great harmonic feeling^^

I like this, it reminds me how it feels to hold a baby when they are new and innocent. Before they get a mind of their own and try everything they can to drive you to drink (a saying my own mother used often)
I especially love the blues, it really seems to give it a magical feeling.

Thank you! Blue is a colour scheme I've returned to many times. I never thought of it as magical. That's nice. I was a bit worried when I started colouring the baby blue. Frozen baby? Babysicle?

Thank you! Even though there were so many interruptions, this was a pleasure to work on. I felt at home with the subject matter and the monochrome blues, which is a colour scheme I return to now and then.
